A while back, I gave you some options<\/a>: \u00a0I suggested that you could choose a Square Dance costume, as about the most uniquely and authentically American quasi-national dress there is. \u00a0Maybe a prairie dress like the TV version of Laura Ingalls wore. \u00a0Or you could go with the Bavarian dirndl or lederhosen. \u00a0After all \u2013 interesting story \u2013 back in World War I, the Germans lost their rights to their trademarks\u00a0in the United States, which is why, in the United States, aspirin is simply an item, like tissue, where in Germany it still a brand name. \u00a0The German pharmaceutical companies were also forced to surrender their American branches into American-owned companies, which is why there are two companies out there by the name of Merck. \u00a0So I figure that the Germans have also surrendered their \u201ccultural ownership\u201d of dirndls, lederhosen, and polkas.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019ve got another solution for you: \u00a0I, myself, personally, give you the right to culturally appropriate Jane the Actuary. \u00a0That\u2019s right, study that profile picture<\/a> carefully. \u00a0Long brown hair, generally worn in a headband or a ponytail. \u00a0You might want to add in some grey roots for authenticity, unless you want to go for the \u201cyoung Jane the Actuary\u201d look. \u00a0Thick eyebrows. \u00a0A weirdly-long neck. \u00a0A complete lack of fashion sense \u2014 a solid-color t-shirt or sweater and Mom jeans will do just fine for everyday, and \u2014 well, who am I kidding, for the true dress-up Jane the Actuary look you\u2019d have to spend the whole of a morning looking for a dress which is forgiving of a fairly misshapen body. \u00a0And, for added authenticity, for the Middle-Aged Jane the Actuary, use your eyeliner to draw in a few chin hairs.<\/p>\n

Sure, no one will recognize you. \u00a0Everyone will ask, \u201cwhat are you supposed to be?\u201d which will, admittedly, mean that it won\u2019t be all too much fun. \u00a0But who really cares about having fun, anyway?<\/p>\n
