That\u2019s the issue with the \u201cone-state solution,\u201d isn\u2019t it? \u00a0The Arabs, predominantly Muslim, wouldn\u2019t necessarily form a majority right away (depending, too, on whether Gaza and those living in \u201crefugee camps\u201d in Jordan, or otherwise living abroad, are permitted to return), but are presumed to inevitably outbreed the Jews in the country to such a degree that in a generation or two, they will outnumber the Jews.<\/p>\n

Then what?<\/p>\n

The truism is \u201cyou can have \u00a0Jewish state, or a democratic state, but you can\u2019t have both.\u201d \u00a0What does it mean for Israel to be a \u201cJewish state\u201d? \u00a0Is it a matter of the simple proclamation of that identity? \u00a0Is it the various ways in which the laws are constructed to favor Jews \u2014 the right of citizenship for Jews from anywhere else who feel threatened, for instance? \u00a0Or is it something more fundamental \u2014 the assumption that Muslims will vote as a bloc, and, as soon as they\u2019re able, disenfranchise Jews and deny them their civil rights?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the trouble. \u00a0There are two ways out of this: \u00a0either the Palestinians support the Jews as an ethnic minority (this wouldn\u2019t be unreasonable anywhere else), with recognition for Jewish holidays, historical sites, and an acknowledgement that what makes the country unique historically is its history as the Holy Land;\u00a0or the integration of the Palestinians, economically at least, into Israel is so complete that resentment is replaced by well-being, and the desire to pop out babies to win the demographic war is replaced by a desire to work for a common economic prosperity. \u00a0(This is, as I recall, the vision of Caroline Glick in her book, The Israeli Solution<\/a>\u00a0which I\u2019m linking to but the patheos site is not loading for me as I type this.)<\/p>\n

And both of those possibilities seem \u2014 well, pretty danged preposterous, don\u2019t they? \u00a0Depending on your point of view, the Palestinians are so utterly corrupted by the failed ideology of Islamism that they prefer perpetual jihad to peace, or the Israelis have so thoroughly abused the Palestinians that it\u2019s utterly unreasonable to expect them to co-exist.<\/p>\n

Consider Gaza. \u00a0It\u2019s one heck of a messed up place<\/a> \u2014 with a \u201ccycle of terrorism,\u201d you might say: \u00a0the Israelis and Egyptians tightly control access to prevent building of smuggling tunnels and to fight against the missiles that they lob into Israeli regularly, which increases the Gazans\u2019 determination to lob missiles, which tightens control further, etc. \u00a0This is clearly not a desirable situation. \u00a0But is it reasonable to expect the Israelis to sit by and let Hamas do whatever they wish?<\/p>\n

And the Palestinans \u2014 who are, by and large, very young, have been indoctrinated in an anti-Israel ideology since birth. \u00a0Is it even possible for these people to move beyond this ideology? \u00a0Are there even sufficient numbers of Palestinians who seek peace rather than conquest?<\/p>\n

This seems, in the end, to be what\u2019s underlying the \u201ctwo state solution\u201d \u2014 the notion that these two peoples simply cannot live in harmony.<\/p>\n
