Retirement USA<\/a>\u201d \u2014 a project of the AFL-CIO, the Economic Policy Institute, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, the Pension Rights Center, and the Service Employees International Union \u2014 coined the acronym \u201cUSA\u201d to stand for Universal, Secure, and Adequate. Their original plan, or rather, \u201cprinciples\u201d as their website doesn\u2019t provide any specifics, promoted mandatory employer and employee contributions to a system administered by a government agency or by non-profits, with annuities at retirement. <\/p>\nThe \u201cUSA Retirement Fund\u201d terminology leaves behind any mandate except mandatory auto-enrollment, so it needed to abandon the \u201cAdequate\u201d part of USA, and swapped it for \u201cAdaptable.\u201d\u00a0 And\u00a0\u201cadaptable\u201d is a fair characterization of the intention\u00a0that the benefits at retirement will be able to be decreased\u00a0or increased as needed.\u00a0\u00a0But I still cringe at the cheesy acronym.<\/p>\n
So how about this:\u00a0 <\/p>\n
Let\u2019s call the plans Qualified Pooled Retirement Plans.\u00a0 We can abbreviate that to a Q-P plan and pronounce it Kewpie (like the doll).\u00a0 We don\u2019t have to give it an abbreviation that \u201cmeans something\u201d any more than the 401(k) does.<\/p>\n
And if it\u2019s really necessary to have a cute acronym somewhere in the picture, we\u2019ll call the establishing act the Helping America\u2019s Retirees Keep the Income they Need Act, and maybe that\u2019ll make Senator Harkin happy enough to abandon the \u201cUSA\u201d\u00a0name.<\/p>\n
