She\u2019s standing up to something.<\/p>\n

What?<\/p>\n

She\u2019s standing firm against a bull, about to charge her.<\/p>\n

But the bull represents, in Stock Market symbolism, a roaring stock market, and prosperity.<\/p>\n

According to its sculptor, who placed it there after the 1987 crash, his bull represents \u201cstrength and power of the American people\u201d (per Wikipedia<\/a>).<\/p>\n

So why is this girl opposing it?<\/p>\n

Does the Fearless Girl sculptor consider Wall Street to be misogynistic? \u00a0Does the sculptor consider capitalism and the stock market something to be fought against, something which should inspire fear, and takes bravery to oppose?<\/p>\n

Apparently not:<\/p>\n

The statue was installed on March 7 2017 by State Street Global Advisors (in a campaign developed by McCann New York) on the eve of International Women\u2019s Day (March 8), to celebrate the first anniversary of its \u201cGender Diversity Index\u201d fund that \u201cinvests in U.S. large-capitalization companies that rank among the highest in their sector in achieving gender diversity across senior leadership\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

according to Wikipedia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So apparently we need to view Fearless Girl with blinders on, discarding the meaning of the bull on Wall Street, and viewing it as \u201cjust a bull\u201d without the \u201cmeaning\u201d imbued in its placement here on Wall Street.<\/p>\n

But beyond that, it is something of a visual equivalent of a mixed metaphor. \u00a0The bull is a symbol. \u00a0The girl? \u00a0She\u2019s a girl, facing down a symbol.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s jarring, and just doesn\u2019t work for me.<\/p>\n
