Take a look in your freezer.<\/p>\n

Is there ice cream in there? \u00a0Or is it \u201cfrozen dairy dessert\u201d?<\/p>\n

Look in your fridge.<\/p>\n

Do you have American cheese? \u00a0Well, no, you don\u2019t, according to the FDA. \u00a0You have a \u201ccheese product.\u201d<\/p>\n

What about the reduced-sugar orange juice? \u00a0No, that\u2019s an \u201corange juice beverage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cranberry juice? \u00a0No, it\u2019s \u201ccranberry juice cocktail.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soy-based imitation nuggets are \u201cchick\u2019n nuggets.\u201d \u00a0If they\u2019re buffalo-seasoned, they\u2019re \u201cwingz.\u201d \u00a0Vegan \u201ccheese\u201d is a \u201ccheese alternative\u201d and manufacturers tend to emphasize the brand and names like \u201cslices\u201d, \u201cspreads\u201d, or \u201cshreds\u201d on their packaging, rather than \u201cprocessed oil product.\u201d<\/p>\n

And a dairy in Florida finally won its battle<\/a> on appeal to call its skim milk, \u201cskim milk,\u201d even though it didn\u2019t add in vitamins, but consider that this was a long hard-fought fight for them.<\/p>\n

So I really can\u2019t blame the dairy industry for calling on the government to prevent manufacturers of plant-based milk-like products (meaning, white flavored liquids) from calling them \u201cmilk\u201d \u2013 e.g., soy milk, almond milk, rice milk, etc.<\/p>\n

Yes, it\u2019s fun to mock them, as in the recent Tribune editorial<\/a>, and they lend themselves to mocking with a bill like the \u201cDefending Against Imitations and Replacements of Yogurt, Milk, and Cheese To Promote Regular Intake of Dairy Everyday Act.\u201d \u00a0And, yes, American consumers are not foolish enough to think that soy milk and cow\u2019s milk are really the same thing \u2014 but they do have a point in that the alternative-milk industry builds off the perception of milk as nutritious, even though the \u201cplant milks\u201d are low in protein and their vitamins are generally added rather than naturally occurring. \u00a0(See here<\/a>, and that from a defender.)<\/p>\n

Would you buy \u201csoy juice\u201d or \u201calmond juice\u201d or \u201crice juice\u201d?<\/p>\n

Sounds icky, doesn\u2019t it? \u00a0And, come to think of it, the FDA probably has regulations prohibiting labeling these products as \u201cjuice\u201d because they\u2019re largely water. \u00a0So why can they use the label \u201cmilk\u201d?<\/p>\n
