So every year we end up making our larger charitable donations at the last minute. (Last year, we ended up only just barely beating the 12 am deadline on the 31st!) <\/p>\n

This is what I\u2019m thinking about: <\/p>\n

SOS Community Services<\/a> in the Ann Arbor, Michigan. This comes recommended from my sister who lives in the area. <\/p>\n

Working Bikes<\/a>, a Chicago group that reconditions donated bikes and ships them overseas or donates them locally. I corresponded with them briefly, because I know that in many cases, it\u2019s better to donate cash that\u2019s used to buy items locally than to donate in-kind items that have to be shipped, butthey say the shipping costs are relatively minor and it\u2019s not a feasible alternative to simply buy bikes locally. <\/p>\n

Catholic Relief Services<\/a>. Good, all-purpose relief agency. <\/p>\n

The biggest problem I have with donations is that as soon as you make a donation, you get endless additional requests; I\u2019m tempted to say, \u201cI\u2019ll donate annually, IF you refrain from bugging us constantly.\u201d Heifer International was especially bad at this. <\/p>\n
