This is just a 5-minute gripe.<\/p>\n
This is that time of year when we\u2019re all encouraged to donate toys so that poor unfortunate children can \u201chave a Christmas,\u201d and when various organizations \u201csponsor\u201d families to provide them with gifts for the children, grocery money for Christmas day, etc.<\/p>\n
My sister, who\u2019s quite involved in this sort of thing, spent part of Thanksgiving studying the sale ads to see what the best toy sales were for the foster children whose wish list she\u2019s trying to fulfill.\u00a0 Suggested spend per child:\u00a0 $100 \u2013 $125.<\/p>\n
At the same time, our church does a similar adopt-a-child:\u00a0 pick an envelope from the back of the church, write a check which will be used to buy gift cards which will be given to the mother to buy gifts for her children.\u00a0 I participated for a while, but never liked the feeling that I couldn\u2019t know\u00a0how my check compared to other participating families\u2019 donations \u2014 was \u201cmy\u201d family getting more or less per child than the other families?<\/p>\n
And this year, on the day that the\u00a0donations were due to be turned in, to give the recipient parents time to shop for their children, there were still large, large numbers of \u201cunsponsored\u201d families.<\/p>\n
Now, partly, this is a matter of how Advent and Thanksgiving fell this year in the calendar.\u00a0 But in addition (and this is just speculation):\u00a0\u00a0 is people\u2019s generosity \u2014 not spread too thin \u2014 but bunched too tightly?\u00a0 \u2014 so that some children receive a Christmas present bounty and others are left in the cold?<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
