The city of Charlottesville has declared Saturday\u2019s gathering at Emancipation Park \u2014 site of the scheduled \u201cUnite the Right\u201d rally\u201d of white nationalists and right-wing protesters \u2014 an unlawful assembly. Police officers are speaking on bullhorns, directing people to leave the park.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
So from all reports these are terrible people. \u00a0And I\u2019d assumed they were planning on following the usual template of trying to rile people up while claiming nonviolent intentions (or perhaps self-defense) on their part. \u00a0But I\u2019ve never seen a city respond by declaring the rally to be illegal. \u00a0As reprehensible as these people are, well, can they do that (<\/em>the city, that is)?<\/em><\/p>\nAnd this is where I leave it. \u00a0I\u2019m heading out for the day. \u00a0I\u2019d love to check back later and have you, my readers, fill me in on what\u2019s going on and what I\u2019d be missing by just checking the usual news sources.<\/p>\n
