\u00a0Still fuming about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/politics\/trump-falsely-claims-obama-didn-call-grieving-military-families-article-1.3566878\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">his claim<\/a>, for instance, that presidents don\u2019t ordinarily call families of deceased soldiers?<\/p>\n<p>Lower them some more.<\/p>\n<p>I am not joking.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you all have had charmed lives, with everyone in your life doing exactly what they\u2019re supposed to do. \u00a0Maybe no one in your life has impairments that prevent them from doing the things you\u2019d like them to do. \u00a0And that\u2019s great. \u00a0But to lament Trump\u2019s latest shocking statement, or twitter rant, is a bit like the advice columnist letter asking what to do about the loved one who persistently does whatever it is that the letter writer wants them to stop doing \u2014 and Amy or Abby or Ann Landers says, \u201caccept that he\u2019s not going to change.\u201d \u00a0Yes, it\u2019s of a greater degree of seriousness than the husband who doesn\u2019t bring you flowers, but we all have to suck it up.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it would be nice to have a president about whom one could share <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/opinion\/commentary\/ct-trump-purple-heart-george-bush-perspec-20160803-story,amp.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">touching stories of human connection<\/a>, but we don\u2019t, and that\u2019s not going to change. \u00a0But as long as Trump\u2019s behavior isn\u2019t impeachable, and this isn\u2019t impeachable behavior, we\u2019re stuck with it, so say the Serenity Prayer another time or two and move on with your day.<\/p>\n<p>(Side note:\u00a0 what we need is a Head of State.\u00a0 The Germans, for instance, have a chancellor and a president; the former is knee-deep in politics; the latter is a respected Elder Statesman whose job it is to represent the country.\u00a0 And in the UK, the queen is the Head of State, and it is the Royal Family, not the Prime Minister, who visits the war wounded, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 So:\u00a0 House and Senate appoint someone who\u2019s good at empathy and speechmaking and, more importantly, respected by everyone, who serves as symbolic representative of the country.\u00a0 Heck, it\u2019s America.\u00a0 Maybe we need Harrison Ford to fill this role.)<\/p>\n<p>Now, that doesn\u2019t mean that one shouldn\u2019t oppose actions of his with which one disagrees, but the point is to calm down and accept the nonsense in the words that he says, and just mentally count down the days left until the next election.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2: \u00a0<em>Special step for lawmakers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Legislate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, GOP, you accustomed yourselves to saying, \u201cif only we were in power, we\u2019d fix everything,\u201d and now you\u2019re discovering that there\u2019s more to it than just complaining. \u00a0It is hard work to put together compromises which have general acceptance, rather than trying to win over congressmen with special giveaways for a district or a state. \u00a0And it\u2019s even harder to design legislation that has broad public support. \u00a0But that\u2019s your job. \u00a0And you can\u2019t just count on Trump doing it all with executive orders, or even with legislative proposals.<\/p>\n<p>And, Democrats, it\u2019s your job, too. \u00a0Not to propose bills that will demonstrate your public policy positions, like a \u201cMedicare for All\u201d bill or a \u201cChildcare for All\u201d bill, to position you for future elections. \u00a0But to work with your colleagues on something meaningful.<\/p>\n<p>Step 3: \u00a0<em>Special step for state GOP organizations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reform your primary process.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No, I don\u2019t mean this nonsense over moving the primary ever earlier in the year. \u00a0I mean, get rid of the winner-take-all primary. \u00a0Allocate delegates proportionately. \u00a0That was, after all, the crucial first step in \u201chow you got Trump\u201d: \u00a0the field of \u201cnormal candidates\u201d was so split, and each one of them was an idiot and thought they could win their opponents\u2019 supporters if only the other guys would drop out, that Trump won primaries, and the states\u2019 full allocation of delegates, with relatively small pluralities. \u00a0Had delegates been assigned proportionately, we\u2019d\u2019ve had a contested convention, and a different outcome entirely.<\/p>\n<p>So there you have it.<\/p>\n<p>Any questions?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Image:\u00a0\u00a0V0050236 A fist-fight between Lord Brougham and Lord Melbourne as Pea<br>\nCredit: Wellcome Library, London.
