So I was thinking about this the other day \u2014 comments are great because you know that a live person is reading what you\u2019ve written and engaging with your ideas, but I hardly ever comment back. This is why: <\/p>\n
1) For reasons that I\u2019m not clear on, but I think may have to do with cookies, even though I\u2019ve told blogger not to count my own pageviews in its pageview totals, it does so anyway, at least sometimes. And, since I have so view pageviews in the first place, I don\u2019t want to \u201ccorrupt\u201d the pageview counter by adding artificial pageviews. <\/p>\n
2) I worry that if I reply to every comment, I\u2019ll look desparate for readers. Which I am, but I don\u2019t want you guys to think that. <\/p>\n
3) I\u2019m generally not a confrontational person, and don\u2019t want to get into arguments. <\/p>\n
4) I tend to write a post before starting work, or at lunch or in the evening, but periodically through the day peek at blogger to see if there are any new comments \u2014 which means I have enough time for a 1-minute break, but not to click through to the post itself and start typing. And often enough I\u2019m looking at the iPad, and \u2014 I don\u2019t know about you guys, but I can\u2019t type on the iPad to save my life. <\/p>\n
So that\u2019s it. I just thought I should put this out there. <\/p>\n
(Did you ever notice, by the way, that \u201cyou guys\u201d is Midwesternese for y\u2019all? And waiters and waitresses who say \u201cCan I get you guys something to drink?\u201d are not being inappropriately informal but just using the \u201c2nd person plural\u201d form of address, which only exists, in the American Midwest, in an informal form. And then there\u2019s the 2nd person plural posessive \u2014 you guys\u2019s or y\u2019all\u2019s \u2014 which, although clumsily, responds to a need for a grammatical from which \u201ctextbook\u201d English doesn\u2019t have.)<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
