It\u2019s cookie-baking time, or, specifically,\u00a0Pl\u00e4tzchen-baking time, traditional German Christmas cookies.<\/p>\n
These are not super-sugary.\u00a0 It\u2019s basically a butter cookie, except with less butter and less sugar than a traditional American recipe,\u00a0and as you can see from the photo (not my own), they\u2019re typically dressed up with jelly and powdered sugar rather than frosted.<\/p>\n
But the best thing about them is that they\u2019re super-easy to make.\u00a0 Maybe not super-easy to make, as a top-notch cookie, but, as a satisfactory cookie for a snack, my 10 year old can make them from start to finish.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s the recipe:<\/p>\n
- \n
- 200g (1 2\/3 c.) flour<\/li>\n
- Pinch baking powder<\/li>\n
- pinch salt<\/li>\n
- 50 \u2013 60 g (1\/4 \u2013 1\/3) fine sugar<\/li>\n
- 1 tsp\u00a0vanilla<\/li>\n
- 100 g (7 tbsp) butter<\/li>\n
- 1 egg<\/li>\n
- 1 tbsp milk or water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Make sure ingredients are cold.\u00a0 Then combine by hand (kneading) to create dough, or use a mixer.\u00a0 Do not overknead.\u00a0 (Using a mixer is probably not the preferred way to make these, but it\u2019s faster and more kid-friendly.)\u00a0 Roll out dough with rolling pin; cut round shapes with cookie cutters, and cut a hole in half of them.\u00a0 Bake at 190 Celsius\/375 Fahrenheit\u00a0until golden brown.\u00a0 Then combine two cookies with jelly, sprinkle powdered sugar on top.<\/p>\n
So there you go \u2014 one of the ways that we carry on my husband\u2019s German traditions.<\/p>\n
