Today, the UN voted by a margin of 128 \u2013 9, with 35 abstentions, \u201cin favor of a draft measure that makes US President Trump\u2019s Jerusalem decision \u2018null and void,'\u201d as Deutsche Welle reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now, I wouldn\u2019t have been as irritated if the vote was for resolution that proclaimed, \u201cguys, we really wish you hadn\u2019t done this,\u201d rather than this \u201cnull and void\u201d language.\u00a0 And, as Eylon A. Levy writes<\/a> at The Forward, there\u2019s a lot of hypocrisy in this proclamation:\u00a0 the status of \u201cwest\u201d Jerusalem as a part of Israel is not under question, except by those who completely deny Israel\u2019s right to exist, and, at the same time, the so-called \u201cinternational community\u201d is perfectly OK with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation\u2019s declaration of East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.<\/p>\n

Folks, it\u2019s nonsensical to say that until there is a Peace Agreement leading to the establishment of the State of Palestine, no nation\u00a0may\u00a0formally acknowledge the capital of Israel to be Jerusalem, because this is a so-called \u201cfinal status issue,\u201d or, rather, a carrot to be dangled in front of the Israelis to ensure their cooperation, so that the Israelis may not receive the \u201cprize\u201d of being able to designate their capital in an internationally-recognized fashion like any other nation until the UN, that is, the Arab World, deems them worthy.<\/p>\n

It is further nonsensical to declare that\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

both with respect to declaring that the United States\u2019 action could possibly be \u201cnull and void\u201d and with the\u00a0idea that the American recognition\u00a0of Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital changes the \u201cstatus\u201d of the city rather than acknowledging the reality that this is the seat of government.<\/p>\n

The Six Day War was 50 frickin\u2019 years ago.\u00a0 The idea that any day now, the UN is going to broker a peace agreement, where they have failed and failed and failed thus far, is preposterous.\u00a0 Near as I can tell, the Palestinians are not interested in peace, if it requires any concessions on their part, because they \u2014 or their leaders, at any rate \u2014 would rather blame the Israeli occupation for their poverty than face the difficult reality of building up their country.\u00a0 There\u2019s also the matter of reports that Palestinian children are relentlessly propagandized into believing that Jews are villainous, and that they see prolific childbearing<\/a> as a sort of \u201cdemographic war\u201d against Israel, regardless of the cost they themselves bear in further intensifying their poverty (Gaza in particular is on tap to become even the most densely populated \u201ccountry\u201d\/country-like region in the world, replacing Singapore and Hong Kong).\u00a0 As for the Israelis, well, so far as I understand, there\u2019s a batch of them that don\u2019t want to give up the West Bank, as part of historical Israel (\u201cJudea and Samaria\u201d), a batch that will accept peace at any cost, and the majority that are resigned to the status quo if the alternative is land surrenders that don\u2019t produce the peace they\u2019re designed to achieve.<\/p>\n

The definition of insanity is famously\u00a0doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that what we\u2019re at with respect to the Palestinians?<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know what the way forward is.\u00a0 Over three years ago, I read a book by Caroline Glick<\/a> that proposed a variant on a \u201cone-state solution\u201d in which Gazans are left to their own devices while Israel incorporates the West Bank; she rejects claims that this is demographic suicide for Israel\u2019s Jews because, she says, census figures for the West Bank have been fraudulent and have double-counted East Jerusalemites as well as Palestinians living in \u201crefugee camps\u201d outside the territory\u2019s borders, who she doesn\u2019t envision being permitted to return.\u00a0 Is that preposterous?\u00a0 Maybe so \u2014 it\u2019s certainly far outside the parameters of what the UN and the other self-proclaimed peace-brokers have declared to be acceptable.\u00a0 But those self-proclaimed peace-brokers are doing a sucky job at it, so maybe it\u2019s time for something else.<\/p>\n

And this is, as is often the case, the point at which I invite readers to jump in, and share their solutions.\u00a0 Folks, what would you do?<\/p>\n
