Here\u2019s the link<\/a>.<\/p>\nThis makes me sick.\u00a0 $24 million for 100 jobs \u2014 that\u2019s $240,000 per job.\u00a0 And they\u2019re not asking for a reduction in their corporate income tax, because they acknowledge that they have had \u201cyears in which its state corporate income tax is minimal.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019re asking to \u201cretain employees\u2019 income tax withholdings.\u201d\u00a0 In other words, they\u2019re\u00a0 not asking for a tax break \u2014 they\u2019re just plain asking for the state to give them money.<\/p>\n
And ADM is very closely tied to the Merc, that is, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.\u00a0 It\u2019s really hard to imagine that they would decline to relocate to Chicago in favor of some competing suitor.\u00a0 St. Louis was floated as an alternative \u2014 that seems unlikely, given that the city\u2019s economy is as troubled as Detroit\u2019s, but, in the grand scheme of things, I would rather they relocate there than that we pay ADM to stay here.\u00a0 For that matter, it may help Decatur, and thus help the state, to have ADM in St. Louis, since it\u2019s only a two hour drive away and would keep ADM\u2019s corporate executives more closely connected to their facilities there.\u00a0 (I say \u201ctwo hour drive\u201d because, growing up, Aunt Carol and Uncle Bob lived in Decatur, and Ya-Ya and Papou lived in St. Louis, so our typical summer vacation was a drive down from our Detroit suburb to these two places.)\u00a0 <\/p>\n
I used to say that, growing up, I was accustomed to big cities being corrupt, having the example of Detroit on the front page of the paper.\u00a0 But moving to Illinois, I wasn\u2019t prepared for the state to be just as corrupt.\u00a0 I guess I\u2019ve gotten used to it now.<\/p>\n
(Side note:\u00a0 a while back, when the last big tax credit deal was in the news, I wrote a letter to the editor in the form of a letter to Governor Quinn, telling him that I would generously agree not to move out-of-state if only he would give me some personal tax credits.\u00a0 Tribune letters-to-the-editor policy is to not allow \u201copen letters\u201d so the LTTE editor changed the pronouns in my letter, making it pretty lame.\u00a0 And the next day, one of the local columnists used exactly the same device for his own column, but as a true open letter, because columnists are allowed to do this!\u00a0 I was wronged!\u00a0 \u2014 and continued to dream of being able to write columns rather than just letters.)<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
