Remember honeycrisp apples?\u00a0 They first appeared\u00a0a couple years ago, I forget when exactly.\u00a0 Wow, were they delicious.\u00a0 I\u2019m usually not a fruit-eater but this apple was extra-tasty:\u00a0 juicy, sweet, crunchy.\u00a0 Yum.\u00a0 Sure, they were $1.99 a pound instead of $0.99, but I\u2019d splurge.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Then they disappeared.\u00a0 Now they\u2019ve reappeared \u2014 but at $3.99\/lb this is far more of a splurge than I ever imagined an apple would ever be!<\/p>\n

Who remembers Pre-Cana?\u00a0 Catholics among you\u00a0may remember the requirement about \u201cbeing open to children\u201d as part of what it meant to be married.\u00a0 And a Dear Prudence column<\/a> I came across when reading something else on Slate is a pretty clear illustration of why the Catholic Church teaches this \u2014 a reader writing to Prudence that her husband, with two children from a prior marriage, was adamant that she never get pregnant, and, when the woman did fall pregnant, was furious, and celebrated her later miscarriage.\u00a0 She became pregnant a second time (despite his vasectomy) and was writing on how to tell him the news, when she was quite certain his reaction would either be abandonment or extreme pressure to abort.<\/p>\n

This situation replays itself multiple times in advice columns.\u00a0 There\u2019s something seriously wrong with one\u2019s worldview when\u00a0it involves being married\u00a0(or, really, in any kind of sexual relationship) and\u00a0considering the possibility of a pregnancy to be intolerable and unacceptable.<\/p>\n
