From Church Times<\/a>, as retweeted by Walter Russell Mead (@wrmead), \u201cAfter Damascus, where?\u00a0\u00a0Churches and cathedrals tell of a growing number of converts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Individuals, families, and small groups of people from other faith backgrounds have been approaching churches in unprecedented numbers \u2014 for spiritual as well as material help. In some cases, they have reinvigorated struggling congregations, while presenting pastoral, cultural, and theological challenges.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Socialist:\u00a0 44%<\/p>\n

\u201cFake News\u201d at the Babylon Bee<\/h3>\n

The Babylon Bee<\/a>, the evangelical Christian world\u2019s (often much funnier) version of The Onion, was fact-checked by Snopes for a \u201creport\u201d that CNN had purchased an industrial-sized washing machine<\/a> in which to \u201cspin\u201d the news before reporting it.\u00a0 It was funny.\u00a0 But Snopes claimed<\/a> that<\/p>\n

some readers missed that aspect of the article and interpreted it literally<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

so they assured readers that, in fact, the Bee was a humor site and CNN did not, in fact, spin its news in washers before publication.<\/p>\n

Harmless, right?\u00a0 At most, a matter of Snopes giving the Bee some extra publicity?\u00a0 You\u2019d think so, except that this triggered Facebook\u2019s algorithms and put the site at risk of no longer being able to use Facebook to promote their own website.\u00a0 As The Federalist reported<\/a>,<\/p>\n

Hours later, Adam Ford, who runs The Babylon Bee, got a notification warning him that the post had been flagged as so-called \u201cfake news\u201d by Snopes, and that if it happened again, the Bee\u2019s Facebook page could face de-monetization and its posts would suffer a reduced reach.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To be sure, Facebook later retracted this statement.\u00a0 But it still doesn\u2019t explain why Snopes felt the need to fact-check this in the first place; PJ Media<\/a> is suspicious and suggests that:<\/p>\n

What more likely happened is that some trigger-happy activists who don\u2019t appreciate Christian and conservative satire reported The Babylon Bee to Facebook, setting off an investigation by Snopes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Which might be excessive, but it certainly points to the ill-effects of dependency on Facebook and Twitter.<\/p>\n
