So Ann Althouse is talking clotheslines now.<\/a><\/p>\n

I remember clotheslines, and I\u2019m not that old.\u00a0 Mom would send us out to hang up the towels, sheets\u00a0and (yes) underwear, too.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure when she stopped herself, actually, but the door from the laundry room to the side yard was blocked the last time we were back home, so it\u2019s been a while now.<\/p>\n

I always believe that the reason for the air drying was mostly financial (was the dryer that much less efficient, or was gas relatively more costly then?\u00a0 Or were finances tighter than I knew?), but she also thought the towels dried better that way.\u00a0 It\u2019s certainly a lot more feasible when you can send the kids out as a chore.\u00a0 Know what else we did when we were kids?\u00a0 She was stingy with buying hangers, so we had to hang our pants two-to-a-hanger.\u00a0 Is that hip now, too?<\/p>\n

But turns out \u2014 in Germany, air drying your clothes (inside, if the weather\u2019s poor) is still the norm, as most homes don\u2019t have clothes dryers.\u00a0 And\u00a0you know what?\u00a0 Women with children generally stay at home or work part-time, and the\u00a0expectation is that all those air dried clothes are then IRONED!\u00a0 (My mother in law once ironed my t-shirts, since, at the time of our first visit there, they didn\u2019t have a clothes dryer.)<\/p>\n

(Oh, and there was an article floating around\u00a0on air conditioning and how it\u2019s bad for the planet but impossible to live without:\u00a0 Germans don\u2019t have air conditioning \u2014 though granted, their weather is milder than the American south \u2014 and southern Europeans don\u2019t either \u2014 though in their case, for reasons of finance rather than noble environmentalism.)<\/p>\n
