\u201cThe TRINITY is the most crucial doctrine of our faith.\u00a0 For Jesus cannot be God without it.\u00a0 If Jesus is not God\u2026we our damned forever.\u201d\u00a0Immediately, I freaked out.\u00a0Who wouldn\u2019t?\u00a0 I\u2019d never been real sure I believed in\u2026or even completely understood\u2026the concept of the TRINITY.\u00a0 I thought it was enough to love God and know that we are loved.\u00a0 Well, apparently not\u2026apparently there was this added construct\u2026one that was nowhere to be found in scripture or any other early manuscripts for that matter\u2026one that was supposed to be obvious.\u00a0 I knew better.\u00a0 Hell, I believed better.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want anything to do with the TRINITY.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve got to find a way to move beyond this bullshit.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got to find a way to God.\u201d\u00a0 I thought I was done with the TRINITY forever.\u00a0I was wrong.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we can get marriage\u2026there will be no going back.\u201d\u00a0 It would be an understatement to say that everyone\u2019s hopes were high.\u00a0 For the first time, courts were widely beginning to affirm LGBTQ equality.\u00a0For years, I was at the forefront of the movement to push harder\u2026wider\u2026faster.\u00a0 Eventually, we won\u2026or at least that\u2019s what everyone said.\u00a0 On the night of our biggest victory, the place to be was at a local monument.\u00a0 Everyone was so joyous.\u00a0 I remember declaring as loud as I could\u2026\u201dWho wants to get married?\u201d\u00a0 I was one of the last to leave that night.\u00a0 I wanted to soak in every last ounce.\u00a0 When I finally decided to go home, I realized I wasn\u2019t alone.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
On a bench, I could see three people in tears.\u00a0 When I asked what was wrong\u2026and if there was anything I could do to help\u2026one of them replied, \u201cIt\u2019s just hard when everyone is excited\u2026and you know you\u2019re supposed to be excited\u2026but you can\u2019t be\u2026because you\u2019re one of the ones that got left out.\u201d\u00a0 Initially, I didn\u2019t know what they were talking about.\u00a0Then, I realized\u2026they were all together.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIf love is love\u2026\u201d\u00a0 The phrase kept ringing in my ears.\u00a0 So, I started to write.\u00a0 Quickly, it became clear that this was not a conversation that most people were willing to have\u2026especially church folk.\u00a0 In fact, most responded with violent condemnations.\u00a0 I guess I shouldn\u2019t be surprised.\u00a0 Love has a way of unsettling things.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t care.\u00a0 I knew what was right.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Alex was one of the first people to contact me.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget that moment.\u00a0 .It was my first encounter with a deeply loving committed polyamorous relationship.\u00a0 With deep pride, Alex told me of his deep love for his wife Emily and her new partner Frankie.\u00a0The love was contagious.\u00a0 I was amazed.\u00a0 In time, I also got to know Emily and Frankie.\u00a0 Slowly, I watched them all collide.\u00a0 I watched them grow.\u00a0 They learned to be together\u2026to love together.\u00a0The three became one.\u00a0 For the first time, I started to understand the TRINITY.\u00a0 I was seeing it take place right before my eyes.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
In just a few short hours, I will preside over a marriage ceremony that unites Alex, Emily and Frankie.\u00a0 For some, such a ceremony is out of bounds\u2026a step too far\u2026a slippery slope.\u00a0 I guess they don\u2019t understand the beauty of the TRINITY.<\/p>\n
