Affordable, Faithful Catholic Education: Online Catholic Schools?

Affordable, Faithful Catholic Education: Online Catholic Schools? November 5, 2014

One of the challenges in rearing our children is giving them an education that is faithful to Catholic teaching and is also physically and financially feasible.  In many areas there are excellent Catholic schools; a few dioceses have taken brilliant initiatives to make it possible for all parishioners to attend, regardless of financial need.  That said, we can hardly describe America in 2014 as a wonderland of orthodox parochial education.

Over at CatholicMom.com this month, I’m discussing whether online Catholic schools are part of the solution to that problem.

My short-version answer is this:

I’m extremely satisfied with our decision to enroll our son in an online Catholic high school.  I’m thrilled with the education he’s receiving.  It’s more rigorous than what I could provide, and it offers him a faithful environment in which to be pushed academically.  I love that it’s a truly Catholic school, and that he’s meeting other kids from families that are serious about their faith.  I like that it saves me time and energy as well.  If you’re unsure about your child’s plans for high school, take at look at the various Catholic online programs.  They aren’t a perfect fit for everybody, but they are certainly worth serious consideration.

That sounds all rosy, doesn’t it?  And yet I sometimes have to talk people off the ledge when they get that lemming urge to make their homeschool look like my homeschool.  Here are four questions to consider:

  • Are you comfortable with computer stuff?
  • Can your child follow the curriculum exactly as written?
  • Is now the time for a traditional school experience?
  • Can you afford it?

I don’t think the answer will be yes for everyone.  If you’re thinking about schools for your child, read the whole thing.
