UPDATED: Ted Seeber<\/a> saves Lent by reminding me that no Lent-o-Rama is complete without\u00a0This Time of Forty Days<\/a>. \u00a0<\/em>I love you, so I post it here:<\/p>\n<\/iframe>\n<p>Now resuming our previously written post . . .<\/p>\n<p>A friend posted <a href=\"https:\/\/focusoncampus.org\/content\/an-illustrated-guide-to-lenten-fasting-and-abstinence\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">this useful infographic on Lenten basics<\/a>, but observed that the current norms seem like an awfully light penance. \u00a0They are. \u00a0At this time, the Church has, in her wisdom, chosen to throw out a little test: Are you in or aren\u2019t you?<\/p>\n<p>Are you so very intractable, so very rebellious, that you have to second guess everything?<\/p>\n<p>On the lax end of the spectrum, we have Catholics who feel that even our very light communal penance is just not on point, and it would be more fruitful to do some other thing. \u00a0On the scrupulous end, there are those who poo-poo easy penances. \u00a0Go big or go home, they say. \u00a0And then there\u2019s the annual, \u201cWhat about the vegetarians?!\u201d \u00a0As if people who spend all year long never, ever, eating any bacon at all need any help from the bishops on how to get penitential.<\/p>\n<p>Americans are disobedient people. \u00a0<em>Question Authority<\/em> is our national slogan. \u00a0So our annual penance is to be asked to undertake something very simple. \u00a0Our penance is written with the average, normal-person\u2019s ordinary life in mind. \u00a0The only question is: Will you do it or won\u2019t you?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Here\u2019s something exciting for my non-Catholic friends<\/strong>: Why yes, you may go get ashes at a Catholic church. \u00a0That is, assuming you\u2019re a wretched sinner who\u2019d like to undertake a bit of public penance. \u00a0You\u2019re welcome to show up and get smeared same as the rest of us. \u00a0Come on in, the dirt is wonderful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Meanwhile, some Lenten links:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/tomzampino\/2016\/02\/lent-a-gathering-up-and-the-humble-heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">Tom Zampino gets right to the heart of Lent<\/a>. \u00a0Quick, short reflection to put your brain on straight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chantcafe.com\/2014\/02\/guide-to-lent-holy-week-and-easter.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fr. \u00a0If your Lent is too easy it\u2019s your own fault, and she\u2019s available with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/catholicauthenticity\/2016\/02\/whatever-it-takes-to-make-lent-hardcore\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">a list of penances guaranteed to pull you out of your pit of self-indulgence<\/a>. \u00a0She\u2019s not kidding, either.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But suppose you actually stink at penance. \u00a0Here are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jenniferfitz\/2014\/03\/lenten-tactics-thwarting-the-meat-demon\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">my tips on thwarting the meat demon<\/a>, and here are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jenniferfitz\/2014\/03\/lenten-links-more-strategizing-for-meatless-fridays\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">more strategies for meatless Fridays<\/a>, including some comments on continuing throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Regardless of where you scourge yourself on the penitential spectrum, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jenniferfitz\/2015\/02\/what-makes-a-good-penance-3-tips-for-mid-lent-adjustments\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">here are my thoughts on how href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jenniferfitz\/2015\/02\/screwtape-vs-slubgrip-fan-fic-or-do-gkc-belloc-knox-lewis-tolkien-have-a-new-colleague\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"
