on the Eternal City<\/a> reminded me of a film I\u2019ve been meaning to mention. \u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mid-August-Lunch-English-Subtitled\/dp\/B00WKZXSLG\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Mid-August Lunch (Pranzo di Ferragosto)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is a desultory Italian film in which the reluctant hero does the thing you probably don\u2019t want to do either. \u00a0It\u2019s a lovely tribute to virtue and friendship, without even a wisp of Hallmark-y sugar anywhere in it.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mid-August_Lunch\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">the description from Wikimedia<\/a>, which doesn\u2019t include the worst of the spoilers:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Gianni (<a class=\"new decorated-link\" title=\"Gianni Di Gregorio (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Gianni_Di_Gregorio&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gianni Di Gregorio<\/a>), a broken man with mounting condo debts, is forced to entertain his 93-year-old mother and three other feisty women during Italy\u2019s biggest summer holiday, <a title=\"Ferragosto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ferragosto\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ferragosto<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I firmly disagree with the idea that Gianni is \u201cbroken,\u201d though one concedes there was an awful lot of white wine and cigarettes going on. \u00a0Also a brief shot of a gorgeous cake.<\/p>\n<p>The humor is subtle, but if you\u2019ve spent much time with 90-somethings it\u2019s deliciously true to life. \u00a0Definitely don\u2019t watch it with interruptions, because the layers of character and meaning piled on in the macaroni and fish scenes are easily missed. \u00a0 If you want to understand what \u201cshow don\u2019t tell\u201d means, this is your film.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Family-Friendliness:<\/strong> Your children are probably not going to sit through this one, but if they do, FYI there\u2019s at least one cuss-word in the English subtitles (I have insufficient Italian to comment on the original) and a brief scene in which if you are paying attention you\u2019ll probably infer a minor character is an adulterer. \u00a0In a different scene, one of the elderly ladies may or may not have been trying to get up an indecent proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013&gt; There\u2019s no nudity or violence or anything, if your children are old enough for the g-rated version of the Ten Commandments, you\u2019re probably good.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>At this writing, <\/em>Mid-August Lunch<em> is streaming free on Amazon Prime, in Italian with English subtitles.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/7\/72\/Poster_large1.jpg\"
