The egregious slate of presidential candidates we\u2019re being offered this year is an understandable cause for concern. \u00a0A question worth considering is whether the two-party system, or some other aspect of American political structures, is to blame for this state of affairs.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, as he considers a separate but related question<\/a>,\u00a0Timothy Scott Reeves, who sometimes guest blogs here, writes:<\/p>\n

For me, THE core value is the understanding of my neighbor as someone made in the image of God. Abortion and euthanasia deny this reality. They commodify people. Racism is of the same spirit\u2026and so is misogyny. They devalue other persons by making them mere objects. That is Trump\u2019s modus operandi,<\/em> and Hillary\u2019s too.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Connecting the two issues, and surveying the culture around us, I can only come to one conclusion: Democracy in America is working very, very well.<\/p>\n

A fair number of\u00a0readers here live in the steady company of faithful Catholics and other Christian disciples. \u00a0The effort to surround ourselves with good influences and to occupy our time with worthwhile pursuits, combined perhaps with a disposition towards always assuming the best about our neighbor, can cause us to lose sight of what\u2019s really going on in the wider world.<\/p>\n

For others, the ignorance comes from too much knowledge: Immersed in the company of generally decent people who mean well and do their best, we aren\u2019t so self-righteous as to fixate on the foibles and failings of our neighbors, but excuse them with the same charity we\u2019d like extended to ourselves.<\/p>\n

Understandably\u00a0so in both cases, and many of us Catholics live with a hand in both of those worlds. \u00a0This is our country, these are our people, what benefit to endless fault-finding?<\/p>\n

So be it.<\/p>\n

But I challenge you to examine the virtues of Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton, and show me in what way they are unrepresentative of American culture.<\/p>\n

***<\/p>\n

Is it that they place too high an importance on status and image and celebrity?<\/p>\n

Is it that they don\u2019t take marriage and family life seriously?<\/p>\n

Perhaps it\u2019s their relationship with abortion that seems out of step?<\/p>\n

Did you imagine that Roe v. Wade\u00a0causes<\/em>\u00a0people to have abortions who would otherwise never think of it? \u00a0Gosh, I would have never, ever, disregarded the life of the least of these among us, but now that the Supreme court says it\u2019s okay, I guess I\u2019d better.<\/em><\/p>\n

Were our rulers corrupt and our people virtuous, we\u2019d live in a country where the law permitted transgressions none of us would dream of committing.<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t so.<\/p>\n

American democracy has its weaknesses, but if there is one thing it does well, it is that it represents us.<\/p>\n

Not me individually, but us collectively.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton are not national enemies, they are national icons. \u00a0They are the very image of our nation, personified.<\/p>\n

If you want better candidates, you don\u2019t need to change party politics. \u00a0You need to change the people \u2014 we the people \u2014 who make the parties work.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s good news in its way, because that change is the mission of the Church. \u00a0What needs to be done is the thing that we Christians do \u2014 or at least the thing we\u2019ve been asked by God to do.<\/p>\n

So: Who will we be four years from now?<\/p>\n
