Elizabeth Scalia\u2019s post on the value of Catholic kitsch<\/a><\/strong> reminded me I had a bleg: What gift should I get #4, and a smattering of other various 1st communicants in the neighborhood, for their 1st communions?<\/p>\n

What I *should* do is visit my local Catholic gift and book store<\/a>, browse around, and spend way too much money. \u00a0That\u2019s my usual method, and it works great. \u00a0Unfortunately, \u201cgoing out and browsing around\u201d is right out just now. So I started reading catalogs. \u00a0I know I don\u2019t want the:<\/p>\n

Holy Family Watch<\/li>\n
Jesus Baseball Coach Figurine<\/li>\n
Communion Girl with Jesus Glitter-dome (okay, that one\u2019s tempting).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
We already have the glow-in-the-dark crucifix. \u00a0Which I love.<\/p>\n
So what shall it be? \u00a0I got #3 a beautiful little children\u2019s Missal, I might could go with something like that. \u00a0We have an excess of Bible and saint books lying around, but I\u2019m not strictly opposed if there\u2019s something that fills an unmet need. \u00a0I\u2019m thinking maybe a nice (small) piece of art might be good. \u00a0Vote away.<\/p>\n

Related: Grandma took #4 out shopping for a white purse and shoes to go with her hand-me-down first communion dress. \u00a0She came home and showed me the goods, and the white heart-tights they\u2019d found to go with. \u00a0(Why yes, my mother-in-law is a genius when it comes to these things.) \u00a0Tasteful, classy, I approved. \u00a0My daughter fully jumped up and down with excitement at the prospect being The First Communicant in a few weeks. \u00a0I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever seen anyone, ever, so excited. \u00a0Nice.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
