Longenecker, with whom I generally agree, <a href=\"https:\/\/dwightlongenecker.com\/cardinal-mccarrick-and-the-peter-pan-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">writes something I think is horribly mistaken<\/a>.\u00a0 He describes McCarrick\u2019s behavior as \u201csex games,\u201d which he attributes to sexual immaturity.\u00a0 Fr. L. is correct in saying that sexual immaturity\u00a0 is a problem; I think he is wrong in asserting that McCarrick was not being predatory.<\/p>\n<p>We are both, of course, basing our analysis on the publicly-available allegations against the cardinal, and may be lacking crucial additional information.\u00a0 For readers here, though, the question is relevant not because we are judge and jury concerning McCarrick, but because we may find ourselves in the position of having to make the call in other situations.\u00a0 Promiscuous behavior among consenting adults is gravely immoral but it isn\u2019t harassment.\u00a0 I think the allegations against McCarrick are allegations of harassment and molestation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jenniferfitz\/2018\/06\/soldiers-for-christ-hiding-under-the-bed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">Yesterday\u2019s post contains links to assorted accounts, some of them quite detailed, of the allegations against McCarrick.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>See if this sounds like \u201csex games\u201d and \u201chorsing around\u201d \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awrsipe.com\/Comments\/2008-04-21-McCarrick_Syndrome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">from excerpts of the civil suit the Archdiocese of Newark settled concerning sexual harassment claims against McCarrick<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As he continued touching me, I felt more afraid. He even tried several times to force his hands under my shorts. He tried to roll me over so that he could get on top of me, but I resisted, I felt sick and disgusted and finally was able to jump out of bed. I went into the bathroom where I vomited several times and started to cry.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s no game.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few things I\u2019ve written about thwarting sexual predators operating in parish youth programs.\u00a0 When the victim is an adult, sexual harassment is still a crime.\u00a0 The same concepts apply:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jenniferfitz\/2015\/06\/how-to-idiot-proof-your-parish-and-diocese-against-the-sexual-abuse-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">How to Idiot Proof your Parish and Diocese Against the Sexual Abuse Crisis<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jenniferfitz\/2015\/06\/phone-before-youre-sure-why-stopping-sexual-abuse-requires-early-police-involvement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">Why Stopping Sexual Abuse Requires Early Police Involvement<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jenniferfitz\/2015\/06\/three-signs-its-a-sexual-abuse-cover-up-and-not-just-an-innocent-misunderstanding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">Three Signs It\u2019s a Sexual Abuse Cover-up and Not Just an Innocent Misunderstanding<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My big three red flags are all present in the McCarrick Case:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Inappropriate Intimacy: The Behavior Doesn\u2019t Match the Context<\/strong>.\u00a0 A group of people sharing a hotel room, dormitory, or other communal housing do not therefore automatically engage in sexual activity with one another.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Intentional or Persistent Behavior<\/strong>.\u00a0 McCarrick wasn\u2019t accidentally rolling over and bumping into someone, apologizing, and making sure it didn\u2019t happen again.\u00a0 He was actively groping.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Won\u2019t Accept No<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is the flag that tells us there was no game.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Promiscuity<\/em> will involve making a pass at one\u2019s intended sexual partner.\u00a0 If McCarrick started with a brush of the hand, and read the signs that an advance was welcome, and thus found one (or several) young men who were interested in a sexual liaison, that would be immoral \u2014 Fr. Longenecker\u2019s \u201csex games\u201d \u2014 but it wouldn\u2019t be necessarily predatory.<\/p>\n<p>By definition of course we can ask ourselves if there is true consent between a seminarian and a bishop, since there is a clear power imbalance at play.\u00a0 But we can at least imagine it\u2019s possible.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<em>predator<\/em>, in contrast, pursues the victim despite the victim\u2019s efforts to escape the encounter. \u00a0 People don\u2019t run to the bathroom and vomit over an awkward case of crossed signals.\u00a0 If the allegations are true, McCarrick was a predator.<\/p>\n<p>So why would Fr.
