Today I saw an otherwise lovely, if a tad anodyne, church statement on recent events, that included The Appeal to The Youthful Savior.\u00a0 I won\u2019t quote it verbatim, but you know the type:<\/p>\n

\u201cYoung people are our future.\u201d<\/li>\n
\u201cChildren will show us the way.\u201d<\/li>\n
\u201cWe need to learn from the youth.\u201d<\/li>\n
\u201cThe next generation will be the ones who solve this problem.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
I\u2019m sorry, are you dead yet?<\/p>\n
Quit trying to brush your personal failings off on your kids.\u00a0 If you are guilty of racism, knock it off and change your life.\u00a0 If you are guilty of failing to evangelize those who live in your parish neighborhood because they aren\u2019t like you<\/a>, change that.<\/p>\n
There is no one alive on this earth who is not able to be part of this change.\u00a0 Are you ancient and bedridden and dependent on others?\u00a0 Treat your caregivers with equality and respect.\u00a0 Are you retired to an all-white retirement community and honestly don\u2019t have a way to get out of your bubble?\u00a0 Quit tolerating the racist jokes of your peers on the putting green.\u00a0 If you are in parish or diocesan leadership . . . just do your job, yes?<\/p>\n

\nOn that last point, let me tell you about a parish leader doing her job.<\/p>\n
This week I sent a thank you note to the youth leader who has played a small but pivotal role in my children\u2019s formation.\u00a0 Why? Because as I\u2019ve watched my kids, each in their various ways, respond to our nation\u2019s present struggle, I knew that this youth leader had contributed her part in helping my kids grow up to be decent human beings who want to do the right thing with regard to human rights.<\/p>\n
She does this by explicit teaching and she does this through her instinctive choice of evangelizing service projects for the kids that transcend social barriers and affirm the inherent worth of all members of our community.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Where did she learn to be this kind of person? From her parents.\u00a0 She has memories of being oblivious to the possibility of racism, of being shocked to discover it in others, and of seeing her parents actively take a stand against racism in ordinary neighborhood life of the 1960\u2019s and 1970\u2019s.<\/p>\n
She learned not to be racist\u00a0from old people.<\/em>\u00a0 She,\u00a0an old person<\/em>, teaches kids to be anti-racist.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m very sorry if the old people in your life are racists.\u00a0 I\u2019m doubly sorry if, like my kids, you are discovering that many teens today still share their parents\u2019 racist worldview.\u00a0 But let\u2019s not compound this with ageism.<\/p>\n
If you are an old person, it is\u00a0your<\/em> job to lead our society in the way it should go.\u00a0 Don\u2019t abandon post.\u00a0 Thanks.<\/p>\n
