Sometimes people ask me, \u201cHow did you become a blogger for Patheos?\u201d\u00a0 (Patheos whose birthday we are celebrating in this post \u2013 Happy 5th Birthday, Patheos!<\/strong>) Allow me to confirm your suspicions by quoting you the letter* I received from our Catholic Channel editor asking me to join on this spring:<\/p>\n

February, 2014<\/p>\n

Dear Jennifer,<\/p>\n

As you know, blogging about the Catholic faith is a sure path to fame and fortune.\u00a0 We who write for Patheos are filthy rich \u2014 pardon me, it\u2019s chilly, I need to grab my other mink coat . . . .<\/p>\n

. . . As I was saying, we have so, so much money, and so much fame.\u00a0 Small children stop us on the street and beg for our autographs.\u00a0 Just last week some prince vacationing in Monaco reached to touch the hem of my silk gown as I was stepping out of my limo at the diamond shop.<\/p>\n

But what we don\u2019t have is glamor.\u00a0 I know \u201cMonaco\u201d and \u201climo\u201d make it sound glamorous, but as you well know, fame and fortune don\u2019t turn a bunch of bleary-eyed desk-potatoes into Grace Kelly overnight.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why we need you.<\/p>\n

Would you please consider blogging for the Patheos Catholic Channel?\u00a0 We are certain that if we all stand next to you in the group photo, the rest of us will, by comparison, seem wildly glamorous.<\/p>\n

The Great Ironing Board Deception<\/h3>\n

Now that you have viewed the video, you are thinking to yourself, \u201cShe irons things!\u201d\u00a0 And while this is not strictly false, those who know me in person know that one cannot maintain an unglamorous facade if one is too well kempt.<\/p>\n

So here\u2019s a making-of-the-video look inside the storyboard process:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Beg Fr. E. to let #4 have her First Holy Communion at Friday daily Mass. We call him Fr. E for a reason**, so he says yes.<\/li>\n
  2. Manically tap out a deadline while the girls are at co-op.\u00a0 Race to get dressed at the last minute.<\/li>\n
  3. Observe there are way too many wrinkles in the linen skirt even for linen.\u00a0 Even for unglamorous linen.<\/li>\n
  4. Quick grab the iron and ironing board, and reduce the number of wrinkles to an amount that matches the usual lack-of-glamor persona certain of us cultivate so effortlessly.<\/li>\n
  5. Fail to put the ironing board away.<\/li>\n
  6. Come home, check e-mail, realize you completely forgot to participate in the Patheos 5th Birthday fun-a-thon.\u00a0 Shoot a video at the very last minute.\u00a0 Decide that cleaning is futile.\u00a0 Determine that the ironing board is all part of the \u201cmeet the blogger\u201d look we\u2019re going for.<\/li>\n
  7. Fabricate some line about how people think you, the Catholic blogger, spend some portion of your life ironing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I\u2019m not really sure what people think I do.\u00a0 I\u2019m pretty sure they think I do nothing.\u00a0 Possibly that I spend long hours strewing debris around my yard.\u00a0 But only my friend Mark H. thinks I\u2019m famous.\u00a0 I\u2019m totally riding that for all it\u2019s worth.<\/p>\n

    My All Time Favorite Post on this Blog<\/h3>\n

    Since I\u2019ve only been here a few months, I think one favorite post is enough.\u00a0 My favorite is my explanation of Double Effect, \u201cDo the Ends Justify the Means?\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

    See?\u00a0 Next to that, any blogger is glamorous by comparison.<\/p>\n
