{"id":8201,"date":"2021-09-06T14:41:40","date_gmt":"2021-09-06T19:41:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jenniferfitz\/?p=8201"},"modified":"2021-09-06T14:41:40","modified_gmt":"2021-09-06T19:41:40","slug":"not-a-fitness-blog-but","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jenniferfitz\/2021\/09\/not-a-fitness-blog-but\/","title":{"rendered":"Not a Fitness Blog, but . . ."},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>PSA and then a personal update at the bottom, hope you are enjoying the holiday weekend.<\/p>\n<p>So <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpubh.2021.695139\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">here\u2019s an interesting study on blood sugar (glucose) levels and COVID outcomes<\/a>.\u00a0 Finding:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We conclude that elevation in glucose levels can facilitate the progression of the disease through multiple mechanisms and can explain much of the differences in disease severity seen across the population.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Super good news, if it holds up to further scrutiny, because getting your blood sugar down is much more realistic than \u201ctry not to be old or fat.\u201d\u00a0 (And yes, I know that there are medications and health conditions that can wreak havoc with your blood glucose levels, no matter how perfectly-perfect you do all the things.\u00a0 So no lab-shaming if that\u2019s you.\u00a0 I get it.)<\/p>\n<p>Three (paid) programs I\u2019m aware of, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>not endorsing any of them so do your own due diligence<\/strong><\/span>, that can provide long term coaching and support if you\u2019re not one of those people who has magically managed to follow some guy on the internet\u2019s advice on how to crack the cocoon and emerge svelte-n-sporty:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefastingmethod.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">The Fasting Method<\/a> \u2013 Basically like that <em>Winnie the Pooh<\/em> episode where Pooh gets stuck trying to leave Rabbit\u2019s hole, except with science and you working with your doctor to make sure you don\u2019t drop dead\u00a0 from the various things that can go wrong when you\u2019re not eating.\u00a0 Also hopefully you aren\u2019t stuck in a hole in the woods while you do it.\u00a0 Can work with any dietary preferences \/ needs whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtahealth.com\/faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Virta Health<\/a> \u2013 Low carb,\u00a0<em>no\u00a0<\/em>fasting, and your coach works with you to find a way to do low carb even though you have _________ dietary restrictions, preferences, etc.\u00a0 Includes direct telemedicine appointments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowcarbprogram.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Low Carb Program<\/a> \u2013 a UK option.\u00a0 NHS has been far more proactive in shifting towards low-carb diets for treating type 2 diabetes than US public health folks have been.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowcarbprogram.com\/research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Their research page<\/a> has some encouraging info if you\u2019re wondering if it is possible for you to improve your situation.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sure there are many others, those are three that happened to come to my attention. Things to look for in scouting out tools and support for figuring out what will work for you for lowering your blood glucose levels into a healthy range:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People who actually understand medicine.\u00a0 Seriously, if your health is already so-so, you don\u2019t want to run crazy experiments on yourself based on what some random guy who got a book deal has to say.<\/li>\n<li>People who understand\u00a0<em>your <\/em>health problem<em>.<\/em>\u00a0 If your situation is less-common, you might be able to get some help from a generic type 2 diabetes program, but you\u2019ll definitely want to work with a health care team that also understands (as much as it is possible to understand) the things that make you different from the average bear.<\/li>\n<li>Something you can sustain.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I mention the paid support programs (again: NOT endorsing any of these, though to my knowledge they are reputable or I wouldn\u2019t mention them).\u00a0 If you\u2019ve struggled in the past, and\/or you don\u2019t have support at home, it may be worth the time and money to seek professional assistance from someone who has experience, a track record of success with patients like you, and legit medical credentials.<\/li>\n<li>Something that works with your mental health needs.\u00a0 Your big picture is probably a little more complicated than just what your lab work shows, or else you would have solved your problem years ago.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anyway, of all the COVID questions and practicalities, this bit of news is very good.\u00a0 It looks like COVID is with us indefinitely, so the sooner you get going on improving your general health as much as you can, the better you\u2019ll fare.\u00a0 No magic cures, and in the long-long-run you still need a strategy for enjoying a healthy, happy eternity, but in the meantime being less-sick is generally much nicer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/darwincatholic.blogspot.com\/2021\/09\/israeli-data-yes-covid-vaccines-are.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Darwin looks at the data on vaccine effectiveness<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>Personal update on me, since I saw this weekend that someone was wondering: Still averaging about a C- in the living-life department, but with good things happening.\u00a0 Nothing worrisome afoot.\u00a0 Am confusing IRL people mightily with my erratic ability to be higher-functioning.\u00a0 It\u2019s fine.\u00a0 Very grateful for y\u2019all who have stuck with me, online or in-person, with your prayers and patience and kindness despite getting very little in return.\u00a0 No one can say I lack good friends.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/2\/27\/WhereRainbowRises.jpg\/398px-WhereRainbowRises.jpg\" alt=\"File:WhereRainbowRises.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo of the end of a rainbow on a hillside covered in pine trees, <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:WhereRainbowRises.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">courtesy of Wikimedia, CC 2.5<\/a>.\u00a0 I just liked it.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PSA and then a personal update at the bottom, hope you are enjoying the holiday weekend.
