Saw a headline this morning about a young woman daring to bare skin for health and safety. \u00a0I didn\u2019t click through, but the photo suggested this was not some horrid case of misogynist cult oppression in a tropical dictatorship. \u00a0More along the lines of: My very typical American school dress code impinges<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I will not claim that you can dress modestly and still be fashionable. \u00a0When the fashion is to maximize sex-appeal, you can\u2019t demure on sex-appeal and still accomplish what the fashion demands<\/strong>. \u00a0But one certainly can choose to dress with class and style without compromising one\u2019s morals.<\/p>\n

[Reminder: I don\u2019t give out fashion advice. \u00a0I leave that to trendier dressers than myself.]<\/p>\n

However, you can only achieve this if you ignore the utterly irresponsible marketing claims of various merchants.<\/p>\n

What you need to know, and your catalog company isn\u2019t telling you, is a tip from the historical re-enacting world: To avoid heatstroke, dress in a single layer of 100% natural, unblended fabric.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That is, to review:<\/p>\n

Or: 100% Cotton.
\nOr: 100% Linen.
\nOr: 100% Wool.<\/p>\n

You can wear a cotton shirt and a linen skirt, that\u2019s not what I mean. \u00a0But if you wear a shirt that\u2019s a \u201crefreshing blend of cotton and linen\u201d you are going to swelter. \u00a0The pinch of spandex in those shorts is asking for trouble. \u00a0Rayon is not your friend. \u00a0The polyester lining in that breezy \u201cpure linen\u201d jacket has all the cooling power of plastic wrap.<\/p>\n

\u2013> There are a few synthetic fabrics in the high-end sporting goods world that are in fact truly breathable. \u00a0I\u2019m not qualified to give you a survey of them; if you have the means you can do some testing. \u00a0Your nylon soccer shorts are not that.<\/p>\n

Where Do I Buy This Stuff?<\/h2>\n

You can find it anywhere. \u00a0On the affordable end of things, your best bets are thrift stores and clearance centers like Ross. \u00a0From there you can go as expensive as you like. I\u2019ve found good stuff at Target, Lands End & LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, Territory Ahead, and on up from there. \u00a0Other than a few obscure specialty vendors, I\u2019ve seen no merchant who carries only heat-appropriate summer clothing. \u00a0You have to read the labels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Read carefully. \u00a0I\u2019ve seen catalog companies mix fabrics within the same collection \u2014 the shirt might be pure cotton, but the matching skirt is cotton-poly. \u00a0An interesting find this year: A handful of light, springy pure merino-wool pieces on super-clearance amid all the noise and craziness.<\/p>\n

You Don\u2019t Need That Many Clothes<\/h2>\n

Is it a pain reading all the fine print in order to acquire that one pair of shorts that won\u2019t give you heat rash? \u00a0Think of it more like a combination treasure hunt and money-saving scheme. \u00a0To keep yourself from wasting money on things you don\u2019t need but that happen to be summer-compatible, the e-book you want is Hallie Lord\u2019s\u00a0<\/a>Dressing with Intention<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t actually object to the owning and wearing of polyester. \u00a0If you have an average metabolism and you\u2019re moving from one air-conditioned venue to the next, you can get away with all sorts of summer fabric failures.<\/p>\n

But if you are finding that it\u2019s just not possible to dress modestly in hot weather, per ordinary standards accepted throughout the western world for the past 80 years, the problem is probably not with the cut of your clothes.<\/p>\n
