A friend suggested the above headline when he passed along this Politico<\/em> piece<\/a> on Jonathan Krohn\u2019s political transformation from 13-year-old conservative boy wonder to 17-year-old Nietzsche-reading, Obama-supporting NYU film student.<\/p>\n

My critical American Spectator<\/em> review<\/a> of Krohn\u2019s first book about conservatism is probably the most infamous thing I ever wrote. It\u2019s the only controversy currently fleshed out on my Wikipedia entry<\/a>, for instance. (Though feel free to add others, folks.)<\/p>\n

The review drew scores of angry comments and denunciations and earned for me the reputation as that guy who beats up child authors. I argued that was unfair because the reputation I really deserved was as the guy who beats up on their parents.<\/p>\n

The review started out by talking about the obligations parents have to their children. It quoted Rush Limbaugh, another speaker at CPAC, the event that made Krohn famous, saying, \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to tell children that they\u2019re wrong. They don\u2019t know what you do. They simply haven\u2019t lived long enough.\u201d <\/p>\n

It expressed \u201canger\u201d at Krohn\u2019s mother and father \u201cfor allowing this book to be published at all,\u201d and argued that \u201cgood parents\u201d ought to keep their children \u201cfrom embarrassing themselves this badly.\u201d After citing one egregious example from the book, it drew out the moral: \u201c[That\u2019s] the sort of unrefined thought that we expect young people to throw out there for adults to respond, \u2018Isn\u2019t he cute?\u2019 or \u2018Well that\u2019s not quite right, son. See\u2026'\u201d<\/p>\n

In the Politico<\/em> piece, Krohn almost agrees with me. He calls much of what he had to say as a kid pundit \u201cideological blather.\u201d He explains: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t me thinking. It was just me saying things I had heard so long from people I thought were interesting and just came to believe for some reason, without really understanding it.\u201d<\/p>\n

And it dogs him still. Krohn declares himself \u201cabsolutely annoyed\u201d that people think of him as a sort of cub scout conservative pundit: \u201cIt\u2019s very hard to break a stereotype like that of yourself.\u201d The piece concludes with Krohn protesting, \u201cCome on, I was thirteen. I was thirteen<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s great but, why do I have the feeling he\u2019s going to look back to this Politico piece in the future and protest, \u201cCome on, I was seventeen<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
