Here’s another one on atonement:
“The logic of punishment was a logic of equivalence (the wages of sin is death); the logic of grace is a logic of surplus and excess.”

His summarist says this: “Could it be that, given the eschatological nature of God’s act in Jesus Christ, the reconciling effect of the cross might not be intelligible in any explanatory economy? Doctrines of the atonement must be careful not to explain the logic of salvation too exhaustively, for nothing forced God to enter human history; there is no causal explanation for grace. It is a gift — something that did not have to be, something than which nothing better can be thought.”
