From Russ Reno: At the end of the day, elections don’t shape or influence our cultural imaginations. On the contrary, our imaginations influence our elections, as the naive nation builders who thought that bringing elections to Iraq would transform the country discovered, much to their dismay. As the midterm elections approach, it’s worth remembering that the future of America will turn on culture, not politics: the poetry of our moral and social imaginations, not punditry. So by all means vote,... Read more

This post is part 5 in a series on The Fall and Sin After Darwin. We’ve been looking at the essays in a book Theology After Darwin centered around a simple question: What are the implications for Christian theology if Darwin was right? In conjunction with this we are also looking at three articles in the recent theme issue of the ASA Journal Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith (v. 62 no. 3 2010) Reading Genesis: The Historicity of Adam... Read more

This was published at Out of Ur blog; it is now edited for a new day. Somewhere between 6pm and 8pm, Central Time, on November 2d, 2010, the eschatology of American evangelicals will become clear. Or, alternatively, if Democrat wins and the evangelical becomes delirious or confident that the... Read more

I posted this morning on the evangelical coalition and how I hope it can be preserved. Dopderbeck, our friend and regular presence on this blog, disagrees and writes this: Is The Fundamentalist-Modernist Controversy Over? We’ve had lots of discussion in recent weeks about “big tent evangelicalism.”  Many commenters desire to preserve the “evangelical coalition” represented by a previous generation of leaders such as J.I. Packer and Carl Henry and institutions such as Christianity Today and Wheaton College. I believe most of... Read more

Evangelicalism is up for grabs. The evangelical coalition of the 1950s-1990s is behind us, the fissures in the movement are everywhere apparent, and the future of evangelicalism … well, I’m not a prophet. I don’t know what will happen, but I do have a sense of where we are and where we were, and it does not appear to me that the future will be like our past. That concerns me. I want to do a series of three posts... Read more
