What are your tech predictions for 2011?<\/p>\n

(CNN)<\/strong> \u2014 This year in technology has been packed with surprises: From the\u00a0rise of the iPad<\/a> to\u00a0Facebook\u2019s global domination<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If this past year is anything to go by, 2011 will be anything but predictable.<\/p>\n

And yet we can at least hazard a guess \u2014 based on early signs \u2014 as to which technology companies will flop and which will fly in 2011.<\/p>\n

The winners<\/strong><\/p>\n

A clear leader in tech this year is Apple \u2014 buoyed by the hugely successful launch of the iPad, Apple became the largest technology company in the world measured by market capitalization in 2010.<\/p>\n

The popularity of the tablet form factor, meanwhile, has brought new possibilities \u2014 in particular, new ways to consume content.<\/p>\n

A first-mover in the \u201ciPad magazine\u201d space is\u00a0Flipboard<\/a>: Backed by more than $10 million in venture capital, the company has attracted early-adopter buzz for its innovative method of presenting Web content in magazine form.<\/p>\n

In 2011, thanks to the iPad\u2019s rise and partnerships with mainstream media outlets, we can expect Flipboard to be a breakout hit. Think of it as the \u201cAngry Birds\u201d of news apps.<\/p>\n

Early adopters in Silicon Valley have also found a new love for mobile photo sharing in the latter part of 2010.<\/p>\n

iPhone photography app\u00a0Instagr.am<\/a>, which launched just 10 weeks ago, claimed this week to have\u00a0surpassed 1 million downloads<\/a>. The service, which emphasizes simplicity and makes it easy to share your photos on social networks, looks set for a stellar 2011.<\/p>\n

Super-simple blogging also saw a growth spurt at the end of 2010:\u00a0Tumblr<\/a>, a 3-year-old New York startup, now serves more than 3 billion page views per month according to analytics service Quantcast.<\/p>\n

The company is on track to \u201ccross the chasm\u201d to mainstream appeal next year.<\/p>\n

2011 will be a great year, too, for\u00a0LinkedIn<\/a>,\u00a0Skype<\/a> and\u00a0Pandora<\/a>. Why? Because all three are prime candidates for IPOs next year.<\/p>\n

Groupon<\/a> too will likely take its chances on the public markets, although I\u2019m yet to be convinced that the daily deals site will continue its growth rate forever. Likewise, gaming company\u00a0Zynga<\/a> looks set to go public in 2011, although its fortunes are still largely dependent on its relationship with Facebook.<\/p>\n

Facebook\u2019s fortune, meanwhile, couldn\u2019t be better. While I don\u2019t think the company will IPO next year, its \u201cLike\u201d buttons will allow the company to seize control of the so-called \u201cinterest graph.\u201d In plain English, Facebook will understand both our social connections and our interests, providing the holy grail of targeted advertising.<\/p>\n

Look out, too, for Facebook deals: The company is perfectly positioned to become a leader in local coupons and offers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
