\u201cBut the gift is not like the trespass.\u201d So Paul says in Romans 5:15. Paul can\u2019t find enough things to compare between Adam and Christ, and the ideas are just tumbling from his tongue. Here\u2019s a brief list:
\nMany died from one man\u2019s sin; grace and gift came to many in Christ.
\nOne sin brought judgment and condemnation; many trespasses are overcome by the gift of justification.
\nOne man\u2019s sin brought death; one man\u2019s grace and gift brings the rule of righteousness in life.
\nOne trespass brought condemnation; one act of righteousness justifies and brings life for all.
\nOne disobedient act makes many sinners; one obedient act makes many righteous.
\nThe message: God\u2019s act of grace, God\u2019s gift, the very life of Jesus Christ, overcomes sin and death to create the rule of life \u2014 justification and righteousness.
\nWhat I see here is an almost incredible span for Paul\u2019s understanding of what Christ accomplished. It is all \u201cin Christ\u201d: he obeyed, he was grace, he was gift, he was righteous \u2014 all of this happens \u201cin Christ.\u201d
\nThe theory of recapitulation is established here: Christ recapitulated Adam\u2019s life, yea all human lives, and those who are \u201cin Christ\u201d enjoy what Christ has done (obedience, etc) and where Christ goes (life).
