For NT Wright, everything pertaining to redemption occurs in Christ \u2014 Christ does it all and those who are \u201cin\u201d Christ get it all. What those in Christ get is the Spirit. Those in the Spirit are released from the Law and its condemnation.
\nWhat most surprises about Wright\u2019s exegesis Rom 8:2-4 is that those who are \u201cin the Spirit\u201d fulfill the \u201cTorah of the Spirit of life\u201d so that the \u201cjust requirement of the Torah might be fulfilled in us \u2026 who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.\u201d Romans 8:2, 3-4. This expression challenges the notion that the Christian is \u201cfreed\u201d from the Torah. Maybe they are freed from the Torah, but in what way? Can they burn their Torah? Obviously not. So, Wright looks a little more closely at the expressions.
\nHere\u2019s a key, and he cuts a path into a significant discussion. For may the \u201claw\u201d or Rom 8:2 is rendered with the word \u201cprinciple.\u201d But, Wright thinks the \u201claw\u201d of Romans 8:2 is the Torah, not a code-word for \u201cprinciple of life.\u201d It should be translated \u201cLaw\u201d and not \u201ca law\u201d or \u201cprinciple.\u201d
\nHere\u2019s his controversial claim: \u201cThe Torah, then \u2026 is the hidden agent of what God has achieved, which is the life of which the Spirit is the personal giver.\u201d
