Repeat. That was the task for some Stanford students in the fall of 2007, in what became known here as the \u201c<a title=\"More articles about Facebook.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/business\/companies\/facebook_inc\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Facebook<\/a> Class.\u201d No one expected what happened next. The students ended up getting millions of users for free apps that they designed to run on Facebook. And, as advertising rolled in, some of those students started making far more money than their professors. Almost overnight, the Facebook Class fired up the careers and fortunes of more than two dozen students and teachers here. It also helped to pioneer a new model of entrepreneurship that has upturned the tech establishment: the lean start-up. \u201cEverything was happening so fast,\u201d recalls Joachim De Lombaert, now 23. His team\u2019s app netted $3,000 a day and morphed into a company that later sold for a six-figure sum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/articles\/266669\/hed-tk-mark-steyn\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Mark Steyn<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cThe belated dispatch of Osama testifies to what the United States does well \u2014 elite warriors, superbly trained, equipped to a level of technological sophistication no other nation can match. Everything else surrounding the event (including White House news management so club-footed one starts to wonder darkly whether its incompetence is somehow intentional) embodies what the United States does badly. Pakistan, our \u201cally,\u201d hides and protects not only Osama but also Mullah Omar and Zawahiri, and does so secure in the knowledge that it will pay no price for its treachery \u2014 indeed, confident that its duplicitous military will continue to be funded by U.S. taxpayers\u2026.That means that once in a while your big-time jihadist will be having a quiet night in watching\u00a0<em>Dancing With The Stars<\/em> when all of a sudden Robocop descends from the heavens, kicks the door open, and it\u2019s time to get ready for your virgins. But other than that, in the bigger picture, day by day, all but unnoticed, things will go their way\u2026.Millions of Muslims support bin Laden\u2019s goal \u2014 the submission of the Western world to Islam \u2014 but, unlike him, understand that flying planes into buildings is entirely unnecessary to achieving it. Will being high-flying Jetsons with state-of-the-art gizmos prove sufficient in a Flintstonizing world? The Pakistanis are pretty sure they know the answer to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>4. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/05\/08\/us\/08secular.html?src=me&amp;ref=general\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Laurie Goodstein<\/strong><\/a> on the secular studies major at Pitzer College: \u201cColleges and universities have long offered majors in religion or theology. But with more and more people now saying they have no religion, one college has decided to be the first to offer a major in secularism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>5. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/articles\/266581\/cap-act-bob-corker\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Bob Corker<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cThe only real way to place America back on a path to solvency is by imposing what amounts to a fiscal straitjacket. To that end, colleagues from both sides of the aisle and both\u00a0<a id=\"itxthook0\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/articles\/266581\/cap-act-bob-corker#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">houses<\/a> of Congress have joined me in offering the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/corker.senate.gov\/public\/?a=Files.Serve&amp;File_id=12ca2650-f86c-49c7-b3ac-1d750587cbf2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">CAP Act<\/a>, legislation that, for the very first time, would establish an across-the-board, binding cap on all federal spending. A real cap on spending tied to a percentage of gross domestic product is a responsible way to impose fiscal discipline and achieve smaller government while incentivizing lawmakers to pass policies that promote economic growth. The CAP Act would result in $7.6 trillion less spending over ten years, fundamentally change the way Washington does business, and finally put America on a trajectory toward fiscal sanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>6.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignpolicy.com\/articles\/2011\/05\/05\/freedom_from_fear\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong> James Traub<\/strong><\/a>, on Obama\u2019s promises: \u201cWell, you\u2019d have trouble seeing that just now, wouldn\u2019t you? The president has been revealed as Jack Bauer, trampling on the niceties of law in pursuit of justice \u2014 or as \u201cCool Hand Barack,\u201d as Maureen Dowd has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/05\/04\/opinion\/04dowd.html?ref=opinion\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">christened<\/a> him. He said he wouldn\u2019t quibble over international law when it came to America\u2019s security \u2014 and he didn\u2019t. Of course getting Osama bin Laden, by whatever means, was a deeply satisfying victory. But it\u2019s very strange to contemplate that the one promise Obama kept from that paradigm-setting speech was the one in which he offered to break the rules rather than to restore respect for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/40\/2011\/05\/Screen-shot-2011-05-09-at-7.18.20-AM.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16629\" title=\"Screen shot 2011-05-09 at 7.18.20 AM\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/40\/2011\/05\/Screen-shot-2011-05-09-at-7.18.20-AM-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\"><\/a>7. Here are some other ongoing disputes between nations over prized ancient artefacts\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>8. <a href=\"http:\/\/newsfeed.time.com\/2011\/05\/10\/survey-85-of-new-college-grads-moving-back-in-with-mom-and-dad\/?hpt=C2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Erica Ho<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cThe kids are coming home to roost. Surprise, surprise: Thanks to a high unemployment rate for new grads, many of those with diplomas fresh off the press are making a return to Mom and Dad\u2019s place. In fact, according to a poll conducted by consulting firm\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twentysomething.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Twentysomething Inc.<\/a>, some 85% of graduates will soon remember what Mom\u2019s cooking tastes like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/newsfeed.time.com\/2011\/05\/10\/survey-85-of-new-college-grads-moving-back-in-with-mom-and-dad\/#ixzz1M8obYtRS\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/newsfeed.time.com\/2011\/05\/10\/survey-85-of-new-college-grads-moving-back-in-with-mom-and-dad\/#ixzz1M8obYtRS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>9. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/apple\/8501849\/Top-20-most-valuable-brands.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Couldn\u2019t pass this one up<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cApple has overtaken Google as the world\u2019s most valuable brand, ending a four-year reign by the Internet search leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>10. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/le\/2011\/spring\/redbull.html?start=1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Drew Dyck<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cThe entertainment emphasis can be traced at least a generation, and perhaps nowhere was the impact felt more profoundly than in youth programs. Instead of stressing confirmation of faith\u2014youth ministry\u2019s original raison d\u2019\u00eatre\u2014the focus shifted to attracting more and more kids to the ministry (which inevitably involved entertaining them). Not necessarily bad goals, but there were some ugly unintended consequences. Today some youth ministries are almost devoid of religious education. They are \u201cholding tanks with pizza,\u201d as church researcher Ed Stetzer has called them. Some use violent video game parties to attract students through the church doors on Friday nights. Over the past year I\u2019ve conducted dozens of interviews with 20-somethings who have walked away from their Christian faith. Among the most surprising findings was this: nearly all of these \u201cleavers\u201d reported having positive experiences in youth group. I recall my conversation with one young man who described his journey from evangelical to atheist. He had nothing but vitriol for the Christian beliefs of his childhood, but when I asked him about youth group, his voice lifted. \u201cOh, youth group was a blast! My youth pastor was a great guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanderings in Sports<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/early-lead\/post\/nba-playoffs-phil-jackson-exits-the-stage\/2011\/05\/08\/AFap4FTG_blog.html?hpid=z3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Phil Jackson\u2019s done in the NBA<\/strong><\/a>: \u201c\u201cAnd you\u2019re not going to force me to answer it, but, yes\u2026all my hopes and aspirations are that this is the final game that I\u2019ll coach. This has been a wonderful run.
