Schleiermacher introduced into the stream of Christian theology a \u201cCopernican revolution\u201d in theological method that regarded it as necessary to adjust traditional Christianity to the culture of the Enlightenment\u2013what we call \u201cmodernity.\u201d\u00a0 To be sure, Schleiermacher did NOT do this uncritically.\u00a0 However, he clearly felt it necessary to rescue Christianity from the \u201cacids of modernity\u201d by redefining Christianity\u2019s (and religion\u2019s) \u201cessence\u201d so that it did not and perhaps could not conflict with the \u201cbest\u201d of modern thought.\u00a0 He redefined Christianity as PRIMARILY about human experience.\u00a0 That is, as he put it, doctrines are nothing more than attempts to bring human experiences of God (God-consciousness) to speech.\u00a0 Schleiermacher placed universal God-consciousness at the center of religion and Christ\u2019s God-consciousness communicated to the church at the center of Christianity.\u00a0 All doctrines and all teachings of Scripture became revisable in the light of human God-consciousness.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
