\nYHWH is my portion (chalaq<\/em>) (119:57). When he pulled up to the table, after the prayers were said, the psalmist only wanted the Lord. Of course, I\u2019m speaking metaphorically \u2014 and so was he.
\nThe portion of the Levites was the Temple.
\nThe warrior\u2019s portion is booty.
\nThe tribe\u2019s portion is a parcel of the Land.
\nYHWH\u2019s portion is Israel.
\nThe psalmist\u2019s portion \u2014 what he has chosen \u2014 is YHWH. He wants God. He wants to commune with God, love God, enjoy God and be enjoyed in God\u2019s presence.
\nIn the second line of this verse (v. 57), the psalmist clarifies that his desire to have YHWH as his portion is a resolution to keep YHWH\u2019s words \u2014 the order is significant. Words are not YHWH; YHWH communicates in those words. So, it is a personal relationship \u2014 communing with God \u2014 that he desires.
\nMany of us will \u201cportion\u201d out Christmas presents \u2014 and I\u2019m not being a Scrooge here in some puritanical fashion to debunk presents. The psalmist would say his real present this year is YHWH.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
