{"id":24267,"date":"2012-01-19T15:58:47","date_gmt":"2012-01-19T21:58:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jesuscreed\/?p=24267"},"modified":"2012-01-18T14:10:33","modified_gmt":"2012-01-18T20:10:33","slug":"a-jesus-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/jesuscreed\/2012\/01\/19\/a-jesus-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"A Jesus Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>We will be participating in an upcoming conference that focuses on the traditional methods and criteria employed by Jesus historians.<\/p>\n<p>From the conveners: The thesis that drives this conference is that <em>business as usual in Jesus studies is over<\/em>. \u00a0 This conference will be hosted by Lincoln Christian University (central Illinois) on October 4-5, 2012.\u00a0 It will feature Dale Allison, Chris Keith, Mark Goodacre, Jens Schr\u00f6ter, Loren Stuckenbruck, Rafael Rodr\u00edguez, Dagmar Winter, Scot, Anthony Le Donne and others.<\/p>\n<p>For specific details about the conference and to register, you can check out this website: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lincolnchristian.edu\/JesusConference\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.lincolnchristian.edu\/JesusConference\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The following is by Anthony Le Donne: \u00a0Before I had taken my present post at LCU, Chris Keith (who already taught there) was kind enough to look through my (then unpublished): <em>Historical Jesus: What Can We Know and How Can We Know It? <\/em>(Eerdmans, 2011). <em> <\/em>Chris and I met for coffee in San Diego and he brought a marked copy of my manuscript.\u00a0 He offered me several helpful suggestions for improvement, most of which I accepted happily.\u00a0 This occasion was the first time he challenged me on my use of the traditional authenticity criteria.\u00a0 I argued that, with a redefined notion of \u2018authenticity\u2019, criteria like \u2018Multiple Attestation\u2019 and \u2018Embarrassment\u2019 might still have a place in the Jesus historian\u2019s toolbox.\u00a0 Chris was adamant that these traditional criteria are in utter disrepair, to a degree that no amount of \u2018redefinition\u2019 could help.\u00a0 We both agreed that the criteria of \u2018Dissimilarity\u2019 and \u2018Semitic Influence\u2019 were broken.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This began a three year debate (often heated but always good-natured) between Chris and myself on this topic, especially after I joined him as a colleague at LCU. \u00a0Chris\u2019s side of the argument calcified into this essay: \u201cMemory and Authenticity: \u00a0Jesus Tradition and What Really Happened.\u201d <em>Zeitschrift f\u00fcr die neutestamentliche Wissenschaft<\/em>, 102.2 (2011): 155-77.<\/p>\n<p>As our conversations about historiography in Jesus research intensified and was carried out at various conferences and other academic gatherings, we realized many, many folks within the field of New Testament studies were eager to chime in.\u00a0 It occurred to us then that we had hit a nerve within NT studies.\u00a0 Jesus historians are divided on how to use these criteria; some have discontinued their use altogether.\u00a0 Others (following Morna Hooker) have always viewed them with suspicion.\u00a0 Moreover, a host of literary, Pauline, and Second Temple specialists have held strong misgivings toward historical Jesus research part and parcel with their misgivings about these criteria.\u00a0 About a year ago it became clear that this swelling discontent needed a pressure valve.<\/p>\n<p>The result is this T&amp;T Clark publication of <em>Jesus, Criteria, and the Demise of Authenticity<\/em>.\u00a0 The link to the book is here (Amazon is here).\u00a0 The book will be available for the first time at our conference (at a discounted rate).\u00a0 And, as all of the book\u2019s authors will be presenting, the conference will function as a live book review.<\/p>\n<p>We expect a very lively conversation and are inviting in several respected respondents such as Tom Thatcher, Clare Rothschild, and James McGrath, inter alia.\u00a0 While all involved with this project acknowledge that business as usual in Jesus studies has failed, most of us have a fairly optimistic outlook for the future of the discipline.\u00a0 We heartily welcome you to come and participate as we clear away a few of the crumbling foundations of previous generations.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We will be participating in an upcoming conference that focuses on the traditional methods and criteria employed by Jesus historians.
