When The High Calling interviewed Dr. Blazer last fall, he talked about a patient who is close to 90 years old. The man had called Blazer a few weeks earlier to say he was feeling \u201cterrible,\u201d that he wasn\u2019t sleeping and was losing weight, all of which are symptoms of depression.<\/p>\n

The patient also said, \u201cI\u2019m not doing my crossword puzzles.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had been doing crossword puzzles for 80 years,\u201d said Blazer. \u201cAll of a sudden he wasn\u2019t doing them. That signals loss of interest, which is another symptom of depression.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blazer prescribed medication. When he talked to the patient a few weeks later, he said he was feeling much better.<\/p>\n

Blazer asked, \u201cAre you doing your crossword puzzles yet?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

The doctor knew then that the man wasn\u2019t well yet and increased his medication dosage.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was sleeping better and his had appetite has returned, but, I\u2019ll know he\u2019s well when he starts doing his crossword puzzles again,\u201d Blazer explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I were a family member and I had seen him doing crossword puzzles every day for 70 years, and then he stopped doing them and was just sitting in a chair, even though he might say he feels fine, I would be concerned about him,\u201d he added\u2026.<\/p>\n

This narrow perspective contributes to the suffering of the elderly, many of whom don\u2019t seek out mental health services, even when they perceive a need for them.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Depression in Late Life<\/em><\/a>, Blazer said that \u201cif they are seen by a primary care physician or social agencies, the depressive symptoms may be overlooked or may not be diagnosed as a depressive disorder and therefore are not counted.\u201d<\/p>\n

For those who do manage to have their symptoms counted, \u201cmultiple interventions, if orchestrated effectively\u201d are likely to be effective.<\/p>\n

\u201cRecognize the symptoms early and try to get help as early as you can. That, to me, is absolutely critical,\u201d Blazer told us.<\/p>\n
