We are in our 13th installment in Pilgrim Heart<\/em> by Darryl Tippens \u2014 and this chp is on \u201cCreating: The Truth of Beauty.\u201d Once again, I admit that I\u2019ve not seen this topic \u2014 creating \u2014 in any study of spiritual formation or in any study of spirituality for a community. So, I begin with a word of appreciation to Tippens for bringing this category into the conversation.
\nDavid asked \u201cone thing of the Lord\u201d \u2026 \u201cto behold the beauty of the Lord.\u201d What role does beauty play in your own spiritual formation or in your church\u2019s formation?
\nDangers? Of course: \u201caestheticism \u2014 a devotion to art as an end in itself \u2014 is a kind of substitute religion\u201d (157) and can be idolatrous for some. Some have rejected art and some are ambivalent about art, and yet others strike the balance of knowing that God the creator summons each of us to be co-creators.
\nBalance? To be sure. As was said by Augustine: \u201cAll things are beautiful because you made them, but you [God] who made everything are inexpressibly more beautiful\u201d (161).
\nWhat can art and beauty do for us?
\n1. It not only appeals to the eye and ear; it transmits insights.
\n2. It can be pre-evangelistic (CS Lewis).
\n3. It can awaken spiritual longing.
\n4. It suggests God\u2019s presence in the world.
\nThat is, as Simone Weil puts it: art is \u201cChrist\u2019s tender smile for us coming through matter\u201d (162).
