David Hempton, one of Ireland\u2019s (and America\u2019s) finest historians of all things evangelical, most notably its Wesleyan\/Methodist axis, observes two features of the great evangelical awakening:<\/p>\n
First, that it was \u201clargely a generational movement of young people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Second, \u201c\u2026 most surveys have shown that the majority of the rank-and-file was female. \u2026 One does not have to burrow very deeply into the archives of Evangelical awakenings to detect the ubiquitous influence of \u2018pious women\u2019 over siblings, husbands, children, parents and friends. Female piety was the lubricant of revival.\u201d<\/p>\n
