The\u00a0 Rice University<\/a>-based open-education platform\u00a0 Connexions<\/a> today unveiled a bold plan to shake up the $4 billion college textbook industry by\u00a0 providing free online publisher-quality textbooks<\/a> for five of the country\u2019s most-attended college courses.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0 OpenStax College<\/a> textbook initiative, which is funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the 20 Million Minds Foundation and the Maxfield Foundation, will publish its first two books \u2014\u00a0College Physics<\/em> and\u00a0Introduction to Sociology<\/em> \u2014 in March.\u00a0Two biology textbooks \u2014 one for majors and one for non-majors \u2014 and a textbook for introductory anatomy and physiology will be published this fall.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we capture just 10 percent of the market with these first five textbooks, an estimated 1 million college students in the United States could save $90 million over the next five years,\u201d said Rice\u2019s Richard Baraniuk, the founder and director of Connexions.<\/p>\n
