When the church is not silent, it often condemns, suggesting people need exorcism or simply more faith, and denying people\u2019s need for legitimate medical intervention to ease their suffering and help them function as the people God made them to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/40\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2010-10-26-at-9.03.14-PM.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-26611\" title=\"Screen shot 2010-10-26 at 9.03.14 PM\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/40\/2012\/03\/Screen-shot-2010-10-26-at-9.03.14-PM-300x164.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\"><\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bobcornwall.com\/2012\/03\/how-do-we-hear-voice-of-god-reason.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bob Cornwall <\/a><\/strong>on how God speaks today: \u201cI think we\u2019ve established over the past few weeks that even if God doesn\u2019t normally speak to us in an audible voice, we can still hear the voice of God.\u00a0 We just need help.\u00a0 There\u2019s Scripture, of course, which we often call the Word of God, and it is normally our starting point.\u00a0 After all, we read from Scripture every Sunday as part of worship.\u00a0 But as the Gospel of John reminds us, Jesus is the Word of God in the flesh, not the Bible.\u00a0 Although Scripture seems to be a central way in which God speaks to us, is it the only way we hear God speak? \u00a0We started to answer this question last Sunday with a conversation about Tradition, which is the ongoing story of God\u2019s involvement in our world, beginning with Creation and continuing to this day.\u00a0 Tradition is an important voice, but perhaps there are still others that might speak to us.\u00a0 If so, could Reason be one of those ways in which God speaks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/thisisourcity\/newyork\/Raisekidsincity.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kathy Keller on why to raise your kids in the city<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2012\/03\/23\/justice\/florida-teen-shooting\/index.html?hpt=hp_t2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">President Obama<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cObama praised Florida Gov. Rick Scott\u2019s decision to create a task force to review the \u201cstand your ground\u201d law and said that it would be important to \u201cexamine the laws and the context for what happened as well as the specifics of the incident.\u201d\u00a0\u201cBut my main message is to the parents of Trayvon,\u201d Obama said.\u00a0\u201cI think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves and we will get to the bottom of exactly what happened,\u201d he said.And he obliquely addressed the racial component of the case, saying it struck home for him because, <strong><em>\u201cIf I had a son, he\u2019d look like Trayvon.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.thearda.com\/trend\/religion\/killing-the-clergy-softly-congregational-conflict-job-loss-and-depression\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Clergy killers<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cThey are called \u201cclergy killers\u201d \u2014 congregations where a small group of members are so disruptive that no pastor is able to maintain spiritual leadership for long.\u00a0And yet ministers often endure the stresses of these dysfunctional relationships for months, or even years, before eventually being forced out or giving up.\u00a0Adding to the strain is the process, which is often shrouded in secrecy. No one \u2013 from denominational officials to church members to the clerics themselves \u2013 want to acknowledge the failure of a relationship designed to be a sign to the world of mutual love and support.\u00a0But new research is providing insights into just how widespread \u2013 and damaging \u2013 these forced terminations can be to clergy.\u00a0An online study published in the March issue of the Review of Religious Research found 28 percent of ministers said they had at one time been forced to leave their jobs due to personal attacks and criticism from a small faction of their congregations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wendymccaig.com\/2012\/03\/19\/letting-junia-fly-releasing-the-called\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wendy McCaig on releasing the caged<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cThis post is a personal confession.\u00a0 I have been in hiding.\u00a0 I know God called me to minister boldly as a part of the church universal but I have been hiding behind my non-profit and under my \u201cExecutive Director\u201d title.\u00a0 I have been hanging out in the margins with people who let me be me.\u00a0But just like Jonah, I am discovering that the call to go to Nineveh is in inescapable.\u00a0 For me Nineveh is the hierarchical institutional church.\u00a0 A place that can be as brutal to women ministers as ancient Israel was to the prophets.\u00a0\u00a0 Well maybe that is an overstatement, but you know what I mean.\u00a0 It is far easier to just not go there \u2013 to remain in hiding.\u00a0 Is that a big fish heading my way?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.derekleman.com\/musings\/2012\/03\/20\/hesed-in-the-bible\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Derek Leman on \u201chesed\u201d in the Bible<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiochian.org\/content\/five-interesting-facts-report-released-noted-researcher\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Orthodox Church in the USA<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--more-->Meanderings in the News<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2012\/03\/17\/opinion\/butler-rutgers-spying\/index.html?hpt=hp_t3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Paul Butler\u2019s eloquent and insightful observations about the Rutger\u2019s spying case<\/a><\/strong>: \u201cRavi did not invent homophobia, but he is being scapegoated for it. Bias against gay people is, sadly, embedded in American culture. Until last year people were being kicked out of the military because they were homosexuals. The United States incarcerates more of its citizens than any country in the world. We are an extraordinarily punitive people.\u00a0Clementi died for America\u2019s sins. But, like earlier policy battles, the debt ceiling negotiations revealed a divided figure, a man who remained aloof from a Congress where he once served and that he now needed. He was caught between his own aspirations for historical significance and his inherent political caution.
