The name Jesus Christ doesn\u2019t appear in The Voice, a new translation of the Bible from a Nashville publisher.<\/p>\n
Nor do religious words like \u201cangel\u201d or \u201capostle.\u201d<\/p>\n
Instead, \u201cangel\u201d is rendered as \u201cmessenger,\u201d and \u201capostle\u201d as \u201cemissary.\u201d Jesus Christ is Jesus the Anointed One or \u201cthe liberating king.\u201d<\/p>\n
That\u2019s a more accurate translation for modern American readers, said David Capes, lead scholar for The Voice, published by Thomas Nelson. Capes said that many people, even those who\u2019ve gone to church for years, don\u2019t realize that the word \u201cChrist\u201d is a title.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey think that Jesus is his first name and Christ is his last name,\u201d said Capes, who teaches New Testament at Houston Baptist College in Texas.<\/p>\n
Seven years in the making, The Voice is the latest entry into the crowded field of English Bible translations. It\u2019s aimed at people who haven\u2019t read the Bible much before and aren\u2019t familiar with church jargon.<\/p>\n
Unlike the updated New International Version and the Common English Bible \u2014 both released last year \u2014 much of The Voice is formatted like a screenplay or novel. Translators cut out the \u201che said\u201d and \u201cthey said\u201d and focused on the dialogue.<\/p>\n
