The other day I mentioned at the very end of my last post about Oase <\/a>that \u201cour\u201d book, A Community called Atonement<\/a><\/em>, was soon coming out. Tony<\/a> Jones<\/a> gave me the \u201cbid-neth\u201d for using the old-fashioned, formal, if not pretentious word \u201cour\u201d and so he asked me, \u201cWhy do you use the plural \u2018our\u2019 when you talk about your books?\u201d Here\u2019s my response:

\nWell, Mr. Jones, we wrote that book all by ourselves. But was I alone?
\nFirst, I trust the Spirit was with me.
\nSecond, at times I thought a muse was on my shoulder.
\nThird, I\u2019m a community-shaped person so nothing I write is \u201cmine alone.\u201d
\nFourth, I was educated in England and there is a bit of a British-ness to saying \u201cour\u201d \u2014 isn\u2019t there.
\nFifth, I\u2019m an academic and we are a little hesitant about getting too subjective and \u201cmy\u201d gets a little too personal. Using \u201cour\u201d shuffles the responsibility to all of us.
\nSixth, some Emergent cohorts read the manuscript as well.
\nSeventh, I had at least two editors work with me on this book.
\nEighth, some colleagues and scholars have read and blurbed the book.
\nNinth, everything I write gets discussed with Kris.
\nAnd, drumroll \u2026
\nTenth, Tony, my man, you are the General Editor of the series. At Abunga.com<\/a> the author line has \u201cScot McKnight and Tony Jones\u201d!
\nIt is \u201cour\u201d book!
\nI now wonder how anyone can say \u201cmy\u201d book now that I\u2019ve thought my way into this mess.
\nCome to think of it, this must be the other one meant in the \u201cour\u201d!
