For the first time since the founding of the Republic, none of the major party candidates for president or vice president is a WASP \u2013 a white, Anglo-Saxon Protestant \u2013 a fact that was confirmed when\u00a0Mitt Romney<\/a>\u00a0picked\u00a0 Paul Ryan<\/a>\u00a0to be his running mate.<\/p>\n
Mr. Romney is Mormon, Mr. Ryan and\u00a0 Vice President Joe Biden<\/a>\u00a0are Roman Catholic, and\u00a0 President Obama<\/a>\u2013 a man of mixed race \u2013 most obviously is not a WASP.<\/p>\n
With the candidacies of Mr. Obama and\u00a0 Sarah Palin<\/a>\u00a0in 2008, the trend toward greater diversity took a big step. But this year\u2019s election and its lack of the kind of person the Founding Fathers were \u2013 ethnically, racially, and religiously, at least \u2013 is causing widespread comment.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the\u00a0first time\u00a0in our country\u2019s history the Republican party is set to nominate a presidential ticket that does not include a Protestant,\u201d writes religion scholar Thomas Whitley on the Associated Baptist Press news blog. \u201cAnd in a strange turn of events that is sure to have many\u00a0WASPs\u00a0scratching their heads, President Obama will be the only Protestant on either party\u2019s ticket.\u201d<\/p>\n
