After applying for 279 jobs over two years, my husband finally got the offer he\u2019d been hoping for: a well-paid position teaching philosophy at a respected university. We should have been thrilled. There was just one little thing.<\/p>\n

The job was in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like we\u2019re being deported from our own country,\u201d my husband said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019ll be an adventure,\u201d I replied, trying to sound game.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t looking for an adventure,\u201d he said. \u201cI was just looking for a job.\u201d<\/p>\n

We didn\u2019t know we would be part of a wave of educated young Americans heading overseas in search of better employment opportunities. According to\u00a0State Department estimates<\/a>, 6.3\u00a0million Americans are studying or working abroad, the highest number ever recorded. What\u2019s more, the percentage of Americans ages 25 to 34 who are planning to move overseas\u00a0has quintupled in two years<\/a>, from less than 1\u00a0percent to 5.1\u00a0percent. Among 18- to 24-year-olds,\u00a040\u00a0percent<\/a>\u00a0are interested in moving abroad, up from 12\u00a0percent in 2007.<\/p>\n

In the past, Americans often took foreign jobs for the adventure or because their career field demanded overseas work. Today, these young people are leaving because they can\u2019t find jobs in the United States. They\u2019re leaving because the jobs they do find often don\u2019t offer benefits such as health insurance. They\u2019re leaving because the gloomy atmosphere of the American economy makes it hard to break through with a new innovative idea or business model. \u201cThis is a huge movement,\u201d says Bob Adams, president and chief executive of America Wave, an organization that studies overseas relocation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
