We\u2019ll be back on Meanderings next week!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not hearing much chat about Tom Wright\u2019s new translation of the New Testament, called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0062064916\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=musionscieand-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0062064916\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Kingdom New Testament<\/em><\/a>, but it sure does deserve careful consideration to be on your desk or chair when you read the Bible. I hope everyone gets a copy and puts it next to the Bible they are now reading \u2014 read them together for a month or so, take it to church, and see what you think. I think you will like it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who has been reading <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0062064916\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=musionscieand-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0062064916\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Kingdom New Testament<\/a>? <\/em><strong>What are your judgments on this translation?<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Better than any translation I know today, other than the most literal of translations (which have an entirely different problem), I hear the author\u2019s Greek behind Tom\u2019s translation. Still, Tom Wright is much more in tune with rendering the Greek NT into contemporary English, and that\u2019s the subtitle of the <em>KNT<\/em>: <em>A Contemporary Translation<\/em>. He does so with <em>elan<\/em> at times. The translation is brisk and energetic, it\u2019s gender neutral, and it has some real surprises that will make you smile \u2014 and provide insight at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>I finished a commentary on the Sermon on the Mount and in reading Tom\u2019s Sermon translation I found the following notable renderings:<\/p>\n<p>Instead of saying Jesus \u201copened his mouth\u201d and said in 5:2, Tom has \u201cHe took a deep breath\u2026\u201d<br>\nWe get \u201cBlessings\u201d and not \u201cBlessed.\u201d<br>\nHe turns it all into a I\u2019m-talking-to-you promise when he has \u201cYou\u2019re going to be comforted\u201d instead of the 3d person plural passive \u201cThey will be comforted.\u201d<br>\n\u201c\u2026 hunger and thirst for justice\u2026\u201d<br>\nOn the bad salt \u2026 \u201cand walk all over it.\u201d<br>\nAs I said, \u201c\u2026 unless your covenant behavior is far superior to that of the scribes\u2026\u201d<br>\n\u201cto the ancient people\u201d<br>\nWe get \u201cfoul and abusive language\u201d in 5:22.<br>\nHe uses \u201cGehenna\u201d instead of hell, and this is puts us in 1st Century Jerusalem.<br>\n\u201cIf your right eye trips you up\u2026\u201d in 5:29.<br>\nThe exception clause: \u201cunless it\u2019s connection with immorality\u201d (5:32).<br>\nAt 5:3: \u201csay yes when you mean yes.\u201d<br>\n5:47: \u201cEven Gentiles do that, don\u2019t they?\u201d<br>\n6:1: \u201cWhen you are practicing your piety, mind you don\u2019t do it with an eye on the audience!\u201d<br>\nHe uses \u201cplay-acting\u201d and \u201cplay-actors\u201d for \u201chypocrite.\u201d<br>\nAnd when you pray, \u201cdon\u2019t pile up a jumbled heap of words\u201d (6:7).<br>\n\u201cGive us today the bread we need now\u201d \u2026 \u201cdon\u2019t bring us into the great trial.\u201d<br>\nIn the fasting passage, \u201ctidy your hair and your beard\u2026\u201d<br>\n\u201cShow me your treasure, and I\u2019ll show you where your heart is\u201d (6:21).<br>\n\u201cIf your eye is honest and clear\u2026\u201d<br>\n\u201cTake a tip from the lilies in the field\u201d (6:28).<br>\nAnd \u201cyou little-faith lot\u201d (6:30).<br>\n\u201cMake your top priority God\u2019s kingdom and his way of life\u201d (6:33).<br>\nGolden Rule: \u201cSo whatever you want people to do to you, do just that to them. Yes: this is what the law and the prophets are all about\u201d (7:12).<br>\n\u201cHe was teaching them, you see, on his own authority\u2026\u201d (7:29).<\/p>\n<p>There is something quite distinct about Tom\u2019s translation: he wants the reader to feel the 1st Century, to hear a Jew call Jesus \u201cMessiah\u201d or \u201cKing\u201d and he wants his readers to know that the word \u201crighteousness\u201d just might not cut through ecclesial thickets and deserves to be translated at times a \u201cjustice\u201d and (I observe in Matt 5:17-20) as \u201ccovenant behavior.\u201d So, yes, there\u2019s a touch of the new perspective, or as Tom calls his approach, the \u201cfresh\u201d perspective, but it\u2019s very even-handed and not at all overdone.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kris and I are on holiday this week so there will be no Weekly Meanderings.
