Stott. When I was in college I began reading his books, listening to him speak \u2014 my first opportunity was a summer missionary in Europe at EuroFest 75 \u2014 and even writing him personal letters. <!--more|inline--><br>\nWhen Stott wrote a piece once and I responded, I sent it to him; he asked me to consider adjusting it some. Which I did. When he got to TEDS one time to address us in chapel, he looked me up, gave me a hug and said, \u201cThanks.\u201d So, when I saw that this aging apostle to the universities had written what amounts to a testament for pastoral ministry, I had to get it and read it.  (I could have put this in my Books of the Year.)<br>\nI\u2019d love to hear from you what you have learned from John Stott. What are your favorite books of his? What did you learn from him most?<br>\nI\u2019ll start with this then give the book a push. I heard him once say that a person\u2019s calling was to go wherever his or her gifts could be exploited the most. Wow did that idea settle into me.<br>\nThe new book is called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FLiving-Church-Convictions-Lifelong-Pastor%2Fdp%2F0830834869%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1197216709%26sr%3D1-1&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Living Church<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\"><\/em>. John Stott is a diamond cutter. He opens up a text, looks it over carefully, then with one gentle tap the text falls open before our eyes. This book does this on the following themes, and if you are a pastor, this book is a great little survey of pastoral theology.<br>\nThe essentials are studied through Acts 2:42-47.<br>\nWorship is biblical, congregational, spiritual and moral.<br>\nEvangelism\u2019s theology, structures, message, and life.<br>\nMinistry is both for the Twelve (Word-based) and Seven (Social-based).<br>\nFellowship is our common inheritance, service and our mutual responsibility.<br>\nPreaching is both contemporary and biblical, tentative and authoritative, pastoral and prophetic, studied and gifted, and passionate and thoughtful \u2014 and I see I have reversed his order of words in each.<br>\nGiving \u2014 ten principles.<br>\nThe impact is like salt and light.<br>\nAnd he appeals to Timothys in our world today.<br>\nThree appendices: one why he is still in the Church of England, his \u201cI have a dream\u201d speech, and some reflections of an octogenarian.<br>\nVintage Stott.<br>\nMy next post on the wisdom of Anglicans will be a brief review of Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FTokens-Trust-Introduction-Christian-Belief%2Fdp%2F0664232132%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1197556729%26sr%3D1-1&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tokens of Trust<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\"><\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I will be the first to admit that I\u2019m a fan of the great Anglican pastor, writer and apostle to the university student, John R.W.
