We all want to be understood. But\u00a0<em>who<\/em>truly wants to sacrifice their time and energy to simply listen to someone else?<\/p>\n<p>We can pay professionals to listen to us (on an hourly basis). We can get our pseudo-therapeutic community to \u201clisten\u201d to us via Facebook and Twitter. But when was the last time you were intentional about sitting with a friend (other than your significant other) and just listening, without inserting your opinions, your commentary, or your general \u201cwisdom\u201d and advice.<\/p>\n<p>I have a friend who describes listening as giving someone a drink of water. Most North Americans have access to clean drinking water and don\u2019t suffer from physical thirst, but people\u00a0<em>are<\/em>\u00a0thirsty for someone to listen to them.<\/p>\n<p>We generally don\u2019t want to be the one listening, though; we don\u2019t want to have to make the effort to try to understand a friend, because that puts us in a position of servanthood. It requires humility, effort, time, and energy.
