I spent a chunk of time serving in an area where I simply did not fit well, where some of my deepest convictions were not congruent, because I was not self-aware enough to have a clear sense of what I valued and believed. I was stuck in a tradition and setting that was familiar and comfortable, but where I did not feel like I could truly be myself; where I could not really talk about the ideas and beliefs that resonated most deeply in me. And I needed people’s approval too much to be able to serve them well. And my neediness made me too defensive to be able to learn from the criticisms that are inevitably a part of ministry.
If I could start all over again, I would spend more time in solitude getting ready for ministry. I would have spent more time getting feedback from people who knew me best. I would try to walk through the pain of letting go what I thought I needed to do and who it was I thought I needed to be so that I could have served with more freedom and effectiveness. I would try to put less pressure on my wife to be committed to my success, rather than to embrace her own gifts and calling.
I would have read Dallas Willard sooner.

John Ortberg, pastor at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church outside San Francisco, responds to our question today:

[1740

post-4136","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-pastoring-and-preaching

Pastor's Wisdom: John Ortberg

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"WebPage","@id":"https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/2008/05/19/pastors-wisdom-john-ortberg/","url":"https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/2008/05/19/pastors-wisdom-john-ortberg/","name":"Pastor's Wisdom: John Ortberg","isPartOf":{"@id":"https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/#website"},"datePublished":"2008-05-19T05:20:00+00:00","dateModified":"2008-05-19T05:20:00+00:00","author":{"@id":"https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/#/schema/person/5919e847c58ffe6efb5899fb61797252"},"description":"John Ortberg, pastor at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church outside San Francisco, responds to our question today: If I could begin ministry all over again, I","breadcrumb":{"@id":"https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/2008/05/19/pastors-wisdom-john-ortberg/#breadcrumb"},"inLanguage":"en-US","potentialAction":[{"@type":"ReadAction","target":["https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/2008/05/19/pastors-wisdom-john-ortberg/"]}]},{"@type":"BreadcrumbList","@id":"https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/2008/05/19/pastors-wisdom-john-ortberg/#breadcrumb","itemListElement":[{"@type":"ListItem","position":1,"name":"Home","item":"https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/"},{"@type":"ListItem","position":2,"name":"Pastor’s Wisdom: John Ortberg"}]},{"@type":"WebSite","@id":"https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/#website","url":"https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/","name":"Jesus Creed","description":"Scot McKnight on Jesus and orthodox faith in the 21st century","potentialAction":[{"@type":"SearchAction","target":{"@type":"EntryPoint","urlTemplate":"https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/?s={search_term_string}"},"query-input":"required name=search_term_string"}],"inLanguage":"en-US"},{"@type":"Person","@id":"https://www.patheos.com/blogs/jesuscreed/#/schema/person/5919e847c58ffe6efb5899fb61797252","name":"Scot McKnight","description":"Scot McKnight is a recognized authority on the New Testament, early Christianity, and the historical Jesus.
